Is a Flat tax a good idea?

Yes 32 35.96%

No 55 61.80%

Haven't ever thought about it much 2 2.25%

Total:89

What about a 100% pure consumption tax.
Raise taxes on all goods and services to be an equal, fair, and sustainable rate and remove taxes on all wages.

Give the lowest earners a stipend so that they are not adversely affected.

You now only pay for what you use and those that are wealthy and use a lot more must pay a lot more. No more rebates or tax loopholes for buying a yacht while donating old one as a tax write-off.

If you buy an $800 plate of foot you pay out the nose for it. If you buy a McD's burger you don't pay much more than you already do.

We live in the age of computers, tax brackets is an archaic idea. Base the tax curve on an arctan function instead of brackets.

looking at the tax bracket i am in... i want to cry T_T

Well, if you asked me I don't think that taxes should exist in the first place because society shouldn't get to the point where wealth needs to be redistributed. However, a flat tax rate would obviously be unfair to poorer people as they have to spend a higher percentage of their money on necessities.

Flat tax is a good idea ...

A system that discriminates people on a continuum wealth isn't equal at all ...

You're criticizing a bracket-based tax as unequal yet constantly support inequality by state that there should be "losers" that have to subsidize the "winners"?

Flat Tax is a great idea that has been tested in many countries. With high tax-free allowance poor people will not pay income tax at all.

Yes that could work. Tax free upto $50,000 and then 80% tax for all income above that or maybe tax free up to $5,000 and 20% tax above that. Whatever if you try to make the lives of the poorer better you will punish the better off more. You need tax for public services to function.

The US for example has far too low tax to the point where it is building up a huge national debt because it is spending far more than it takes in. Same as many countries.

Over $61,000 of debt per head in US and that doesn't include public liability debt for pensions etc I suspect. Expenditure needs to reduce and tax needs to go up considerably. So not really a time for a flat tax rate. If anything they need to squeeze every level of society to the maximum they can get away with that won't hurt the economy.

You have to spend less, not tax more.

There should be losers and winners but that doesn't mean we need to treat each of them differently ...

I don't know. Even though as I make $105K per year (minimum) I would gain very much from a flat tax, I'm not sure if it's fair.

Hard question. I might be brainwashed by Swedish socialist values of equality.

Well, Sweden isn't really socialist. It's more of a social democracy, and yes, you've been brainwashed into thinking that they really care about equality.
