Welcome to the mod approved MyVGC Best Video Game Tournament Topic. Or, perhaps, more specifically, this is the...game selection topic to see if this even really has potential as an idea. If 2 or 3 people post here and it doesn’t get much attention beyond that, then, well, at least I’ll know. =p

To put it simply, this is a bracket style tournament to determine which game is loved the most by the community, while also hoping to encourage some more in depth discussion on the side.

So How Does This Work?

The tournament will run a 32 game bracket, determined via a method mentioned below. As mentioned previously, this is a competition to determine the “most loved” game, which works a bit different than simply determining “what the community’s favorite game is.” In an attempt to avoid the flame wars and zerging sprees that have dominated past attempts at running tournaments like this, the score between two competing games will not be decided by a simple popular vote. If you wish, you can simply post in the topic saying which game you want to vote for, and leave it at that. Doing so will earn one point for that game. Alternatively, if you provide a detailed description of at least a paragraph explaining why you enjoyed that game specifically, you will earn two points for that game. Finally, posting an explanation of at least two paragraphs demonstrating why you prefer that video game to its competition will earn three points.

TL;DR Version of the Point System:

Simply posting that you’re voting for a game = 1 Point

One paragraph explaining why you enjoy that game = 2 Points

Two paragraphs explaining why you prefer that game to its current competition = 3 Points

The point (pardon the pun) of all this is not to provide a writing assignment; it’s to encourage people to actually think through and explain why they prefer certain titles to others. With that in mind, a (somewhat arbitrary) requirement of mine is that these all be fairly reasoned and respectful comparisons. Don’t simply say “I like Battlefield more than CoD because CoD sucks and a two year old could have designed its multiplayer.” Critiquing a game is fine, but it should be criticism that, if the developers were to read it, it could reasonably be seen as constructive criticism. This is done to hopefully lessen the chance of flame wars.

Two final things to note; once a vote is posted, it cannot be changed or altered. The game you are voting for, as well as the number of points, are locked in. This is partially so that I can keep a consistent running tally on votes without having to backtrack, but also to discourage people from nagging others about expanding their votes for additional points. Furthermore, I reserve the right to determine how much a vote should be worth. I will try to be as generous as possible in regards to this, but if I truly feel the post has nothing of value and is simply rambling in order to gain an extra point, then I can choose to lessen its value to two points or one point.

Selecting the Games

The selection process is pretty simple. If you wish for games to be included in this tournament, you need do no more than post here. There is a list below which you can fill out, ranking your favorite games of all time on a scale from #1 (favorite game of all time) to #10 (10th most favorite game of all time).

A game in the #1 spot will earn 10 points, a game in the #2 spot will earn 9 points, #3 will earn 8, all the way down to #10 which will earn 1. As an example, let’s suppose Fallout 3 received two first place votes, a fifth place vote, and three ninth place votes. It would have 32 points in total.

One important restriction: In order to prevent one game series from taking over the bracket, you may not include more than three games from any one franchise.

After the voting process ends, the 32 games with the highest point totals will qualify for the bracket, and will be seeded according to how many points they got. The game with the most points will be matched up against the last game to get in, the game with the 32nd most points, in the first round. The game with the 2nd most points will go up against the game with the 31st most points. So on and so forth.

Again, in order to support whatever the video game equivalent of affirmative action is, no more than five video games from the same franchise can qualify for the bracket stage of the tournament.

Finally, unlike actual voting, your lists can be changed up until the (TBD) voting deadline.

Depends on how much money the Nintendo people are willing to wire to my bank account.
