Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is the game industry headed for a new crash?

A CRASH IS COMING?

Yes. 42 18.18%

No. 117 50.65%

Maybe. 44 19.05%

It is the smartphones. 28 12.12%

Total:231

I got to looking up game sales for several game series. I saw a disturbing theme. Most series seem to be on a decline. I mostly compared first week sales for games in certain series, but also used other methods.

Multipltform games: Call of Duty is down. Assassins Creed down. Titanfall... fallen. Final Fantasy 15 in Japan, has only sold less than half of what 13 did. We will see about the rest of the world.

Xbox: Forza down. Halo down. Gears of War: grinding down.

Playstation: Gran Turismo down. God of War down. LittleBigPlanet: Littler! The only improvement I saw is Uncharted slightly up.

Nintendo: NSMB U is way down from NSMB Wii. Golden Sun down. Smash Bros.: Smashed. Well, compared to the last Wii version. Pokémon is slightly up from the last 3DS game, but that may be because of the Pokémon Go craze of summer.

So what is going on?

The simple answer without complicating things is digital sales. No one really tracks digital sales for the public but the general thought from the publishers is digital counts for 20-40% of sales depending on the game. Some game franchises are still down a little but nothing to be overly concerned about.

It already did crash but you have to think of it like the 1988 stock market crash. 1988 was much worse than the one in 1929 but we had some so far since then the impact wasn't as noticeable,we had much more in place. Same with games. They already crashed with smartphones and consoles themselves. The hardware with less returns and more costly to develop so we have less original IPs and more remakes/remasters plus the micro transactions and DLC practices. It did not crash in the same way 1983 did.

No.

And you have what I will call numbers blindness.

It's when you look at numbers and only see what you want to see or somehow make the numbers to support whatever you already have in your head; all the while ignoring or not noticing all the relevant information that would disprove your theory..... eg.

GT6 was released in the same year the PS4 was released.

Sales of all the games you mentioned are down are of long standing series that had peaked and are seeing a decline.

Ignored sales of series that are selling better than ever, eg Uncharted 4.

Ignored new chart toppers like overwatch and even the new doom, destiny....eye

ignored digital sales which accounts for 30% sales relative to physical sales.

Ignored the fact that there have been more software sales between the xb1/PS4 in three years than there was in 4yrs on the PS3/360.

Also ignored that the GoW game you mentioned being down (ascension) was pretty much a spin off.

I could go on and on..... but I think I have shown you that you aren't looking at your numbers the way you should have looked at them.

No. Thread closed nothing further to discuss

It feels like you jumped to a far far far conclusion off in some mythical land.

What about over Saturation?
What about losing interest/ Being burnt out?
What about being tired of the same franchises over and over again?

Of course not. Switch 350 million lifetime sales FTW!

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

This is not true at all.... this is a very common misconception that anyone who bothers to avtually look at whats out there will see its false. Now I'm not even going to mention indies, because that will make the list of new IPs too long, but right off the top of my head...

Days gone, horizon, the order, driveclub, bloodborne, Spiderman,  quantum break, scale bound, sea of thieves, overwatch, watchdogs, the division, the last guardian, no mans sky, star wars battlefront, destiny, death stranding, Splatoon,........etc

And I'm sure I'm missing a ton of new IPs, and I'm not even mentioning complete reboots like God of war and resident evil where the game is only similar in name but could as well be completely new games.

so what is this talk about no new IPs.....

Mobile gaming, probably. Gaming is mainstream enough to not crash at this point anymore. There could be some fluctuations, but not a crash.
