Forums - Gaming Discussion - No new IP has sold 25m+ on consoles for the last 10 years.

That's because there's barely any new IPs these days. Since this generation started these are the only new IPs that have been released or even announced for the future by major publishers:

Most publishers don't even want to invest in new IPs anymore, Sony is the only one willing to throw money at games that don't have a brand name already.

Gaming wouldn't be the same without Sony this gen.  Just look at that list of new IPs.  Now wonder almost everyone wants a playstation.

Making new IPs isn't hard.

Making new IPs that can sell at least 1m or 5m for a first party is the hard part.

That's a tall order to measure games.

25m+ is ridiculous benchmark.

9 "new" IPs managed to hit 20m+ last generation and that doesn't include their sequels.

What are those 9 new IPs again? OP is a bit of a mess to understand.

And most of their physical new IP's are million sellers, so sony must be doing a great job by your definition!

Ok, not to sound rude but what's the point of the thread? What are you trying to say?

I really do not mean to sound rude but no reasons were given in OP.

CoD got a reboot last gen??? It's never had a reboot...

Wii Sports was bundled with every Wii.

Wii Play came with a free controller.

Kinect Adventures came with every Kinect.

So Wii Fit, Minecraft, Nintendogs, NSMB and Brain Age are the only ones I'd count and three of those sold mostly to "non-traditional gamers", who quickly left the gaming scene after the Wii/DS era ended, which is very apparent by WiiFit, Nintendogs and Brain Age dropping off a cliff.

The Quality new IP's of last generatoin were not the highest selling, that's for sure.

1m+ sellers 2006-2009 = 90+/370 (New/Total)

New 1m+ sellers 2013-2016 = 28/150 (ish)

2007 alone had 27/~100 new 1m+ IPs.

How many of these 90+/370 (New/Total) games reached 1m+ sellers until 12/31/2009?

You are comparing sales of 3 years with sales of a lot more than 3 years.

25m units is beyond huge, its an anomaly. I don't see it as a necessity for one game to sell so much.

Maybe if they make the next Star Wars Battlefront great, they could potentially hit that figure. Thats if the first hasn't already burned many peoples taste for the franchise. No game could do it on merits of its gameplay alone, their has to be some cultural relevance attached.

Breakout IPs are good for the industry and who doesn't like a new massive cultural phenomena?

It's not just massive sellers though, new, successful IPs in general seem to be massively down. Most of the biggies have declined/maybe declining. Where's their replacements?
