I'd say the Wii, Kinect, and Move made me look like more of a dumbass than a VR headset ever could.  Once you get a chance to try the right game in VR, you'll change your tune.

Just don't assume you'll hate it. That's closed minded and Shigeru Miyamoto wouldn't approve.

Okay, I'll have to give it a chance.  Last time I tried VR was at an amusement park in the 90s.  I might try it in store but I won't be looking at the tech too closely till about another 4-5 years when they can make it better and cheaper.

Wooo! You won't regret it! Wish I could invite you to my Hide and let you try out Star Wars Battlefront. It's the bees knees.

My wife says you can't come over, though.

This is true for every technology - HDTV, LCD Screens, 1080p, 4K, Plasma, OLED, etc. - the early adopters will always pay the most until the technology gets mature and the manufacturing process and materials become cheaper. This is still the frist year of mainstream VR. Give it time.

You are right about that.  I almost feel bad for the early adaptars to blu ray which threw down 1000 dollars on a blu ray player when it first came out.  I believe most of those early players became obsolete (the ones that couldn't connect to internet and do firmware update) when they revised blu ray to 2.0 or whatever.  You can correct me if I'm wrong but I could have sworn those early blu ray players became 1k bricks due to not being able to play the newer blu rays.

Correct, same with all HD-DVD players. I also have a $2.5k brick in the basement, HD ready CRT tv that doesn't accept 720p or 1080p, only 480p and 1080i. A friend of mine found out that his LG tv from last year does not support current HDR, was touted as HDR compatible, doesn't work with ps4 pro.
At least PSVR is 'only' 399. I can live with that becoming obsolete sooner than later. Really, 399 is cheap for early adoption. The HMZ T3, non vr 720p headset, is still over $1000. (Started at 1300 pounds)
Btw my early blu-ray player, ps3, became a $600 brick too :(

Anayway, I'm not too sure about a global virtual reality association. Not so happy into the feet dragging the bda has turned into and all the compromises that ended up being 4K blu-ray, and yet another format war HDR10 vs Dolby vision. The most annoying thing about VR currently, to me, is the constant paranoia about causing motion sickness, restricting movement speed and adding blinders that you can't turn off. It's always nice to put DC VR back on after another crawling simulator. Don't need an association to limit freedom in this early experimental phase.

For $400, I'm willing to bet I already have more games for PSVR alone than the average gamer has fit their console of choice. If it fails, my purchase is justified. I think it's going to be okay, though.

Hmm I've already bought more games for psvr than for the WiiU I had since launch... And the WiiU has certainly justified itself to me.
I'm looking forward to Resident Evil 7, Obduction and Star trek bridge commander.

A step in the right direction but the software has to sell otherwise VR isn't going to hold up.

This is good and bad.

In the early years this will help establish VR, but as was mentioned above, it could turn into a nightmare later.

Right now I think this will help market VR and make sure it stays at the forefront of tech shows, and stay dives development teams to experiment with the tech.

On the bad side, we don't want industry standards to get out of contoll. We need things lke 90 - 120fps standard to make sure VR doesn't turn people off with negative first for mpressions. On the other hand we don't need a standardization of devices and controllers. PSVR needs to be unique from Vive, which needs to be unique from the Rift. At this stage we need to look at it from as many angles as possible.

Then worst case scenario we end up with the TV and Blu-ray situation, where stupid decisions are being made. Stupid decisions which are a huge part of why PS4 Pro does not support the new Blu-ray format. Sony does not support the UHD name, and they don't support Dolby Vision, both of which are terrible for the industry. If things get out of hand with this new organisation, I just hope Sony sticks to their guns, and goes on their own if it means doing the right thing. I am confident with their track record that they will continue to do whats best for the industry.
