Forums - General Discussion - Global Virtual Reality Association

Acer Starbreeze, Google, HTC VIVE, Facebook’s Oculus, Samsung, and Sony Interactive Entertainment today announced the creation of a non-profit organization of international headset manufacturers to promote the growth of the global virtual reality (VR) industry. The Global Virtual Reality Association (GVRA) will develop and share best practices for industry and foster dialogue between public and private stakeholders around the world.

The goal of the Global Virtual Reality Association is to promote responsible development and adoption of VR globally. The association’s members will develop and share best practices, conduct research, and bring the international VR community together as the technology progresses. The group will also serve as a resource for consumers, policymakers, and industry interested in VR.

VR has the potential to be the next great computing platform, improving sectors ranging from education to healthcare, and contribute significantly to the global economy. Through research, international engagement, and the development of best practices, the founding companies of the Global Virtual Reality Association will work to unlock and maximize VR’s potential and ensure those gains are shared as broadly around the world as possible.

VR.... Maybe it will be mainstream in 10 years. Personally I'd like to see it fail because I don't like most of the companies involved and I don't give a shit about a technology that makes you look like a dumbass.

This right here should give the naysayers something to think about. VR is here to stay.

Talk to me when the price actually reaches a level that the mass market will accept.

I'd say the Wii, Kinect, and Move made me look like more of a dumbass than a VR headset ever could.  Once you get a chance to try the right game in VR, you'll change your tune.

Just don't assume you'll hate it. That's closed minded and Shigeru Miyamoto wouldn't approve.

If they really believe that, the first thing they should do is make common tools so that any VR game can be played on any VR headset, unlike now where every VR game has to be tweaked and modified to run on the different headsets.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

On topic, I hope they succeed and do everything possible to put VR in the hands of as many people possible. My mind is full of ideas that would work in VR. This could be an exciting time and we're here on the ground floor to watch it grow.

This is true for every technology - HDTV, LCD Screens, 1080p, 4K, Plasma, OLED, etc. - the early adopters will always pay the most until the technology gets mature and the manufacturing process and materials become cheaper. This is still the frist year of mainstream VR. Give it time.

You are right about that.  I almost feel bad for the early adaptars to blu ray which threw down 1000 dollars on a blu ray player when it first came out.  I believe most of those early players became obsolete (the ones that couldn't connect to internet and do firmware update) when they revised blu ray to 2.0 or whatever.  You can correct me if I'm wrong but I could have sworn those early blu ray players became 1k bricks due to not being able to play the newer blu rays.

Okay, I'll have to give it a chance.  Last time I tried VR was at an amusement park in the 90s.  I might try it in store but I won't be looking at the tech too closely till about another 4-5 years when they can make it better and cheaper.
