Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Spencer: Scorpio Isn’t Trying To Compete with High-End Rigs, It’ll Have Console Price Point

PS4 will be cheaper holiday 2017 than it is now, PS4 Pro will be cheaper holiday 2017 than it is now. PS4 is selling ridiculously, Scorpio has to launch pretty cheap to make any meaningful dent sales wise to PS4.

The problem I believe with a lot of people thinking is that people continue to believe that MS is releasing the Scorpio to beat the PS4 or PS4 Pro.  That would be silly as the install base is to big especially for a cosole that will still have a premium price point compared to what is on the market.  The key for MS is to have solid sales where the Scorpio will be the base for their next system.  MS does not need to beat or exceed the current PS4 or Pro, they just need to sell well, be competitive and gain back their lost 360 fanbase.  From there if the Scorpio outperforms the PS4 Pro, performance mindshare does the rest as long as MS can compete on the gaming front.  Either way the Scorpio is just a stepping stone.

It would be silly to try and compete with high end rigs for the following reasons:

1. Insurmountable costs
2. At said costs we enthusiasts prefer assembling our own and mixing/matching parts
3. At said costs you'd expect your rig to be capable of more than merely gaming

Was this ever a question? I would think the disaster that was those steam consoles would show that there's no room for overlap here. The only real "gaming rigs" that will sell regularly are laptops, as those can be a pain to customize (though even there the hardware is actually beginning to release in forms that fit both PC and laptops, probably a trend that will remain going forward).

Still looking forward to the Scorpio though!

Console price? $599 US dollars confirmed!

But seriously... if the X1 S can be $249 than the Scorpio can be $399.
