Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo switch will use USB-C cables for charging

What she said. People are happy because the Switch charger won't be only for the Switch, and your future phone/tablet/whatever charger will work on the Switch too. Less cables to manage, no need to go buy a new one for the Switch if you lose it, just use one you already have.

Now if Nintendo makes the charger the same way Apple and everybody else is, in which it is essentially an adapter with a USB port that allows the cable to unplug and get power from any PC or device with a USB port, that would be divine.

I agree, I'm just saying people are kinda confusing this in some cases. This isn't Micro USB which is what most phones use today.

It is a very good port technology though, that's why its interesting. It could even theoretically allow for a "supplemental GPU". NOT saying that will happen, just saying that option is actually there for Nintendo in theory because of USB-C.

USB-C is pretty new, cutting edge tech. The applications are far more broad than just "fast charging" (though that is certainly nice).

Another theoretical possibility with USB-C ... you could transfer a full game onto the system memory or SD Card extremely quickly, talking like a 30-64GB game in a matter of minutes. The time hold up would actually be on the internal memory or SD Card side.

With USB-C, you could potentially swap in games from a HD to the internal Switch memory (and back on) a whim so you can chose to take along a chosen set of games when you go out. At home, you have a central HD with all games and chose specific digital games to put on the Switch for the month/week/day, just like you would pick physical carts now.

It might be a realistic workaround for going fully digital.

wait, no thunderbolt, wtf?

this is better than that :)

Well thats not accurate. USB-C maxes out at 10Gbps while Thunderbolt3 is 40Gbps, 4x faster. :)

I don't know if Nintendo will ever follow through on that SCD patent, but without a high speed transfer port such an idea is impossible even if Nintendo wants to do that in 2-3 years.

You would need USB-C with the higher transfer rates. If you have that, then it's an option that Nintendo has.

Nice, USB cables a lot easier to carry instead of those bulky 3DS chargers.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Well, I never had a bulky 3DS charger for my 3DS XL.

I bought a 3DS USB cable instead, which was much cheaper and much more versatile... I can use it with all my USB chargers and my powerbank.

good choice. finally

Switch!!!

Cool. I have a Droid Moto Z Force so I already have a ton of C cables. Keeps other people from stealing them since they all use micro USB cables.

But this is about chargeing the system... and USB is much cheaper, more commonly used by people.

In that sense this USB port for chargeing is better.

Would be weird for anything that releases in 2017 to not have USB type C
