Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo switch will use USB-C cables for charging

I think people are confusing this with Micro USB.

USB-C is a *different format*, your cell phone Micro USB cables will not work with this.

USB-C has many other advantages, but odds are not many people have these cables in their homes yet.

There's no way the 3DS could've used this, this format didn't exist back then, it's relatively new for electronics as is, most phones/laptops/tablets don't support it yet.

no, people are happy because this thing charges your device really fast, user friendly, can be used for external processing power and different inputs like hdmi and vga etc, also, not propietary and you can buy a cheap one or an expensive one.

Finally they're using a standard charging port.

Also it better come with the machine..

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

Hopefully the listing is accurate.

Is it just me or the removed it from the site? (I did see it being there when I saw the thread)

Does this make up for the 3 - 4 hour rumored battery life?

I think people shouldn't overhype USB-C and keep their expectations in check. Most likely, it will be USB-C over USB 2.0 with quick charging if we are lucky similar to how phones with USB-C connectors are... Maybe USB 3.0 if we are extremely luckly.

And I highly doubt it will have Thunderbolt since that is an intel technology which requires a licensing fee...

Oh and I doubt it will support external GPU

What she said. People are happy because the Switch charger won't be only for the Switch, and your future phone/tablet/whatever charger will work on the Switch too. Less cables to manage, no need to go buy a new one for the Switch if you lose it, just use one you already have.

Now if Nintendo makes the charger the same way Apple and everybody else is, in which it is essentially an adapter with a USB port that allows the cable to unplug and get power from any PC or device with a USB port, that would be divine.

I agree, I'm just saying people are kinda confusing this in some cases. This isn't Micro USB which is what most phones use today.

It is a very good port technology though, that's why its interesting. It could even theoretically allow for a "supplemental GPU". NOT saying that will happen, just saying that option is actually there for Nintendo in theory because of USB-C.

USB-C is pretty new, cutting edge tech. The applications are far more broad than just "fast charging" (though that is certainly nice).

Another theoretical possibility with USB-C ... you could transfer a full game onto the system memory or SD Card extremely quickly, talking like a 30-64GB game in a matter of minutes. The time hold up would actually be on the internal memory or SD Card side.

the switch is rumored to have usb 3.0 AND usb 2.0, with that rumor comes every othe confirmed rumor so far.

also, this doesn't make any sense cause the usb itself requires a licensing fee... thunderbolt or not, requires a fee.

and about the external gpu, usb c makes the patented suplemental computer device possible. So it could be the dock or a more powerful dock that you can buy separately. It's about the real posibility and not overhyping. But even if the hardware is just for fast charging and different inputs like usb c to hdmi, that's something to be excited about compared to a normal usb or a shitty propietary charger.

That would be odd to have both 2 and 3. If you are gonna have usb, why not just have 3?

Yea but Thunderbolt requires a bigger fee... The entire thing is made by intel so it would be odd if Nvidia uses thunderbolt. USB is a non-profit organization and the only thing the vendors pay for is to have the certification on their product.

Actually, USB-C itself doesn't because you don't require USB-C in order to make external GPU possible since we have seen quite a few interfaces that are both standard and non standard allow external GPUs to work. But sure, it makes it possible but there is a pretty good chance it won't be a thing so I don't think people should get their hopes up. Cause just think about it. This is the exact reason why there is no GPU or CPU in the dock itself. The Switch is designed to be taken out of the Dock at any given time but if it has an eGPU, it simply can't...

Its fine to be excited about fast charging and inputs but being excited about the possibility of it having an eGPU is going a bit far imo. Yea yea patent but there have been quite a few patents (such as the projector) that will never make it into the final product so I highly doubt this will.
