I think you're confusing turn-based with menu-based.

No I am not. People are. RPGs been playing them for 30 years. Best friend teaches game design. People think somehting like Xenoblade isn't turn based when it is. You have a swing timer in DAO which is based soley on your characters stats. All that is turn based.

If your best friend teaches game design, then maybe you should get together with him and examine what a "turn" is. If I'm playing a game that uses ATB, enemies aren't going to wait their turn, they'll attack while I'm making my decision.

No, but I believe for games like Final Fantasy it's time to let it continue evolving and to quit complaining about it moving in a better direction. There's still plenty of high profile IPs that use turn by turn, though, such as Bravely and Pokemon.

My personal belief, though, is that turn based is a relic from an age in gaming where real time combat was cumbersome and not worth the effort. Even the best of the best, like Zelda and Mana, still don't feel as fluid as they could be by today's standards. I don't believe it should stop being a thing... But less of it certainly doesn't hurt my feelings.

People aren`t complaining about it moving in a better direction. They`re complaining about it moving in a worse direction. You may disagree, but don`t try and say they`re arguing against things being better when in their view they`re doing the exact opposite.

84 on Metacritic, one of the most successful launches in the franchise, and it's consuming everyone's feeds...

Having your own opinion on something is fine, but when referring to what a majority likes, there's no longer subjectivity. You can measure how much it is liked and determine if it is going on a good direction. Sales and reviews indicate that it is, so the idea that it's going in the wrong direction is the unpopular opinion.

Again stats play into timing. Your characters stats. Enemy stats as well. You don't get it fine. Tired of explaining.

But what is "worse direction" really? You personal taste?

Cause take FFXII for example, it sold very well, it has 92 metacritic rating, a lot of people are excited about its release on Ps4 this year. So I can't imagine that game being a turn in the wrong direction just because it changed battle system. I can imagine it being in the wrong direction for you, because you dont like that particular style, which is a respectable opinion, like any opinion, but that does not constitute the general opinion or perception of the game.

Sales and reviews indicate that it is, so the idea that it's going in the wrong direction is the unpopular opinion.

Firstly, what the majority wants is irrelevant. When people say `x sucks, why can`t they do y instead` I think it`s safe to say that they are saying they don`t like x and want y instead and aren`t pretending to speak on behalf of the majority or anything like that.

Secondly, it doesn`t matter whether it`s an unpopular opinion or not doesn`t change the fact that people are complaining about what they see as a worse direction.

Finally, it`s only got a 1 higher metascore over 13 and in the UK (IIRC the only reason we know for sure so far) it actually sold less at launch than 13, so even assuming the majority prefers it over 13 (let alone older, better FF games) is strenuous at best.

Well arent you a special snowflake?

I, for one, rated ffxv 10points lower than metacritic, but that doesnt mean my opinion is more important than theirs. Ppl weigh different things differently. I think story and character are much more important in rpg, but others maybe dont.

But then again double standard exist. The so-called king of jrpg (you knw what it is) could get away with terribad story and super outdated graphic, while others would always get bashed if they have the same issues.

And please.. the current standard is different than standard from 10 years ago. We dont see 9s and 10s thrown at every game nowadays.

Do people complain about things for reasons other than personal taste?

And regardless of what other people think or how many are them there are it doesn`t make the people who are complaining about stuff`s opinions wrong.

No, I agree with you, Its an opinion, it cant be wrong, but its weird to read that they're taking the "wrong direction", said as an absolute truth, when the direction they take its proven to be successful.

Pokemon sells like 10M copies for a reason.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

because it's pokemon. The same reason why pokken sold more than tekken and sf5.

Funny thing is that you go on to say that opinion is subjective, that every person will feel different about the game and all,but then you go on and bash FF for getting away of criticism and suggesting that the past games are overrated and nowadays games are rated more "fairly".You go on to say about double standard, but here you you practicing it yourself.Please.

Well arent you a special snowflake?

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Firstly, when you say "x sucks, went can't they do y instead", it's subjective. The only way to view statements like that as objective is to view it as a community, and most of us? We like it.

Secondly, yes it does. It shows that your wants are the unpopular, and you will continue to be left behind in your hate.

And finally, it has a full point higher AND an 8.0/10 rather than a 7.3/10. And FFXIII was also a heavily hyped game, so it's unsurprising that it still outsold at launch.
