Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Switch's processing power important to you?

Is it?

Very, I won't buy it if it's weak 171 25.26%

Moderately so 281 41.51%

Not really 127 18.76%

No, power doesn't matter to me 63 9.31%

No, cos I'm not buying one 35 5.17%

Total:677

If Switch is running Seasons of Heaven in real time ... then to be honest I don't really even care about the power gap.

I wanted a leap beyond the Wii U/360/PS3 gen and that would show me a large leap forward. Any third party should be able to port a PS4/XB1 game if its capable of those visuals. It may require some actual work to do so, but if Switch is capable of that then it should also be doable.

Like wrote, Switch power compare to Pro/Scorpio will be similar like Wii U compared to XB1/PS4, just that Switch will have much more modern tech and architecture compared to Wii U and that makes difrence, but XB1/PS4 are still this gen consoles and they will remain that and gap between them and Switch will be much smaller. So point is that Switch will be in much better place on market compared to Wii and Wii U, if we talk about hardware power and capabilities.

It's not that Switch is actually any more powerful for its time though. Just as Wii U was about 10% the power of its strongest rival, the standard PS4, Switch looks to be about 10% as strong as its strongest rival, Scorpio.

Now we beginning to go in circles...yes but XB1/PS4 are still this gen consoles that are staying on market they are not last gen console that will be replaced, and Switch power offcourse will be compare to them also.

Not really, as long as it gets the games, and they run good, then 'sall good.

I'm now filled with determination.

Offcourse it is, Scorpio and Pro are parts of same platform like XB1 and PS4, they are not brand new genartions platforms, only difrence is power. XB1/PS4 will still get full support until next gen despite stronger versions of hardware.

Offcourse that is matter, beaucse PS4/XB1 are still curent gen consoles same like Pro and they will get full suport at least until next gen arives. PS2 did had some 3rd party support later (same like PS3/Xbox360) but didn't had true new gen games (Batman, Mass Effect, BioShock, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout, Asasins Creed, Dark Souls...all Sony exlusives...), while XB1/PS4 will continue getting current gen games and exclusives at least until next gen arrives despite Pro and Scorpio.

But none of that matters though. Fact is, Switch will be launching alongside consoles that are just as far ahead of it as PS4/Xbone are ahead of Wii U. So the gap has not changed.

Wii U at 176 Gflops vs 1.84 Teraflops PS4 = x 10 performance advantage for the PS4.

Switch at 600 Gflops? vs 4.2 Teraflops PS4pro = x 7 performance advantage for the PS4pro.

The gap has been reduced, abit.

The problem for nintendo comes when 2019/2020 comes around.... and a New Playstation 5 is out.

The Nintendo Switch at around 600 gflops, is gonna look really old, next to a 10-12 Teraflop PS5.

I hope nintendo fix's this by doing a mid gen upgrade, like Sony and MS did.

Get ready for a Switch 2.0, 3 years lateron.

I do think we are reaching a bit of a point of diminishing returns.

10-14 Gigaflops is nice and all, but how many studios even have the money to make games that look like a CG motion picture?

Diminishing returns is going to weight in at some point too.

However if the Switch is less than 600 gflops lets say 400 gflops we are back in the same position. Don't forget we are in that hype period where people over-estimate performance based on their own wishes rather than the reality of what Nintendo often does (go cheap). At this point before the wii u launch there were estimates of about 800 gflops, then games didn't reflect that so opinions had it as 500 gflops with poor optimisation and lazy developers, then more serious information came in based on first views of the chip x-rayed and 352 gflops was worked out then finally after much analysis years later 176 gflops. I think 600 gflops is a high estimate especially with the predicted increase of battery life from 3 to 5-8hrs. It could be 600 gflops but knowing Nintendo it could also be 300 gflops etc. I'm going with 400 gflops based as a middle figure between the highest and lowest realistic figures.

Also do we even want higher performance, a few extra textures and graphics effects but recharging ever 3 hours compared to slightly reduced visual quality and 5-8 hours battery life which is far more practical and less annoying. Be careful what you wish for.

But every game made for the Scorpio HAS to also work on the standard Xbox One. Same with every game made for the PS4 Pro, it HAS to also work on the standard PS4. So bringing the Pro and Scorpio into this discussion is mute point. Every game will have a standard version so that is where you look at the power difference. The gap between Switch and standard PS4 and standard Xbox One is small.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

how small ?

casue if games will be lessor on standart PS4/X1 how realistacly well do you think they would run on hardware twice as weak or even weaker.

How do you know that? And in terms of what?

Smaller than the gap between Wii and Xbox 360/PS3.
