Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Switch's processing power important to you?

Is it?

Very, I won't buy it if it's weak 171 25.26%

Moderately so 281 41.51%

Not really 127 18.76%

No, power doesn't matter to me 63 9.31%

No, cos I'm not buying one 35 5.17%

No way the dock will ever have additional processing as the interface to connect the two parts would be hugely expensive and that's not what Nintendo does. I did feel the Dock may have had active cooling so it could be run at higher ghz when docked but that appears not to be the case. If it does clock higher when docked it will simply be because it has no restrictions on power consumption when docked and doesn't have to worry about battery life. I must admit I was surprised the Switch didn't have passive cooling for portable mode and active when docked that seemed like the ideal scenario to maximise performance at low cost.

Still wondering if the recent rumours about the tablet being 1080p are true and if so a VR visor will be available. I wonder if the 720p resolution info was purely a red herring to make people believe Switch didn't have a VR option. It just looks like a brilliant VR system with the removable controllers etc. I won't be surprised if the surprise is VR.

More power does not equate to third party developers flocking to the console. I believe too many of you are placing stock in power meaning it will entice third party developers. There is nothing about Street Fighter V that screams, "impossible to recreate on Wii U". Developers go where the business is best and that is it. Nintendo needs to create a winning business model (3DS is testament to this fact) and that problem requires a more serious fix than a more powerful console. At this point, a more powerful console will do very little to help Nintendo's relationship with third party developers.

With that said and all things relative, I am fine with Switch being the exact same power as Wii U because that level of power is great for a hand held.

Nope, in terms of hardware the main thing that matters is that it does not get in the way of playing games.

Yes. I like pretty things, games that run well (Zelda U is struggling) and technically ambitious games (also Zelda U). 500Gflops will be enough for Nintendo to deliver stunning experiences, I would love to see what they could do with 4Tflops but Im happy with the balance of power and functionality Switch appears to be delivering.

If that multiple chip scenario is doable, not only would it be a cheaper upgrade/add on solution...it also opens up the possibility for Xavier tegra coming out in '17, just so happens to be x2 (double the gpu cores in) Switch.  So if the handheld is "switch", then this could be the Fuse box lol sell it with a pro controller and done.  After that, take the same xavier chip and put that into a new 1080p tablet etc.

Before this talk gets too crazy, I don't think Nintendo will go that far with it.

Fundamentally they're going to want the same experience on mobile, that will be the main focus, everything has to work well on mobile, so having a dock that is like something ridiculous like 5x more powerful isn't going to fly.

I was just saying *maybe* there could be an option where you have the portable version of a game that can run at home at 1080p instead of 540p-720p, but not much changes otherwise.

I don't think Nintendo wants situation either where you are playing a game at home and then "Switch" to portable mode and the game freezes/locks and then suddenly the graphics are waaaaaay worse and your frame rate is miles worse.

I'd guess right now graphics maybe 2x better than a PS3/360 at 720p, all I was saying is I wouldn't mind that same graphic fidelity but at 1080p as an optional cheap dock. Getting into wholly different graphics architectures/generational leaps in performance though ... that is whole other can of worms.

I think it could fly as a Native 4k experience. Would be relatively cheap ($199 box) and wouldn't be much difference outside of image clarity.

No, some of the most beautiful games this gen have been on Wii U.

It would have to be restricted to resolution differences only though mainly. If you allow developers to start doing things like using extra horsepower for different frame rates and different game performance in general, you're going to have a lot of people who will say "I think my Switch is broken, every time I undock it the graphics get all shitty and slow", you don't want that.

So it would have to be the same base graphics as the portable Switch, which is OK, my guess is that's kinda like PS3 x2 graphics.

I'd expect it to be mid way between Wii U and PS4 if it is $250-$350 range.

not really.... i would buy it for their exclusive games (first party) or second.... few third party won't be available in ps4.
and mine is coming tomorrow... !!! omg i am so excited!

( 176 Gflops + 1.84 Teraflops ) / 2 =  about 1 Teraflop.

Rumors are saying its gonna be around 600 Gflops or so, when docked.

So basically its gonna be less than what your expecting.

Still Nintendo are wizards at getting good looking games outta their hardware, so Im sure whatever it ends up being, it ll have great looking games.
