Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Splatoon has outsold any Paper Mario, Metroid, Pikmin, Starfox, and all but 1 Kirby game

Say what you will about Wii U's sales, but it has to be the console with the most impressive attach rates for its top selling games ever. 6 games will sell 5m+, one of those has an absolutely insane attach rate of 60% without being a bundle title. Compare that to three 5m+ games on the GCN which moved almost twice as many systems, and 5 on the N64 which moved almost 3x as many systems.

Fun fact: Splatoon has a higher attach rate to Wii U than Smash Bros Melee did to Gamecube.

Thats because its better than all those franchises. Yes I said it. Metroid sucks and Splatoon is better. Although its a shame it outsold Prime. The first one was excellence.

Good to know we've established Wii Sports as the best game of all time.

Part of the success can be attributed to the lack of good options coming to the Wii U in the last couple of years. So, in some ways, it faced a lot less competition than most other games.

Didn't help games like Starfox Zero, Ultra Smash, or Paper Mario Colour Splash.

Those were the other options which pushed people towards Splatoon.

Lulz.

In seriousness though, there were alternatives. I'm sure the majority of Wii U owners had at least one other current gen platform, whether that be 3DS, or PS4/Xbone.

Even on Wii U there were options; Mario Kart 8 and Smash were the system's flagship multiplayer titles, while if you wanted a shooter you had Black Ops II and Ghosts.
