Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo is looking interesting again for the first time in almost a decade..

My Nintendo hype had started to wither away since the early Wii days, and they REALLY started to lose me shortly following the release of New Super Mario on the Wii at the end of 2009 to the present. But lately they have really started to win me back.

First we have the mobile game phenomenon known as Pokemon Go. Ok, so the app's appeal and success has tapered off quite a bit, but at the end of the day, it's still provides plenty of fun compared to most mobile games I've experienced, at least in short bursts.

Next, Nintendo reveals perhaps the best looking Zelda game since Twilight Princess. Zelda with the open world of Skyrim? Count me in!

Then you have the NES classic. Arguably the peak of Nintendo undergoing a renassaince and being rereleased with 30 games preloaded. As a kid of the early 90s, it brings me back to the good ol' days. Kinda sucks that you (so far as we know) can't upload more games, but it's still a neat concept and a cool little collectable. I love that it uses what seems to be an exact replica of the classic NES controller, and we know longer have to deal with the inferior sideways wii-mote for play some of the old classics.

Finally, we have the Switch reveal. The Switch is absolutely what the Wii U SHOULD have been. Seamless console-handheld gameplay played through a variety of control outputs on a variety of screens. Of course, the jury is still out on how this will all play out, particularly with the software, but so far I'm really liking what I'm seeing. I don't believe this will be a Wii-esque phenomenon or even reach NES level status but, being a console/handheld hybrid will what sounds like a solid game lineup so far, I think it has the potential to put Nintendo back on the map.

I spent many of day reading and posting on this site starting all the way back in late 2006. For the last few years, I almost completely cut myself off from vgchartz for couple main reasons. Aside from the fact that I've become increasingly busy, the first major reason was the constant barrage of ridiculous "Nintendoom" hysteria being posted here, but the biggest reason was probably simply the fact that I personally wasn't excited or interested in Nintendo anymore. I'm also an Xbox gamer but I enjoyed talking Nintendo first and foremost, and up until these past few months, they simply didn't have me interested enough to talk or read about them anymore, so I bailed. I really feel this is changing, and with the rise of these new developments, my interest in talking about games, and specifically Nintendo, has similarly risen again.

What are your thoughts? Is Nintendo starting to finally show some signs of life again? Or perhaps they never lost you in the first place, but they nonetheless are looking more interesting to you?

I think Nintendo started to make a comeback when they revealed an online shooter. The first new IP in a very long time. Do yourself a huge favor if you are getting the Switch system, buy Splatoon. It is literally a reinvention of the online shooter only the minds of Nintendo could make.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

they've been interesting for quite a while. Had the Wii U not been a total flop, we could've had a better gen than the Wii/DS. Personally, i think the wii u/3ds alone are much better, but whatever

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

Hard to say. It's good that they're finally reacting to market trends instead of insisting on living in their weird little Nintendo bubble where it's always the early '90s, but I'm not as impressed by the Switch as a lot of people seem to be. I have a bad feeling that rather than being the best of both worlds it's going to fizzle for being neither fish nor fowl. Plus they have such a hard time getting games out in a timely fashion, and "better third party support than the Wii U" isn't going to be enough to fill those gaps. They need something very close to parity with X1/PS4 support IMO.

It's definitely going to be interesting to watch, though. They've been awfully quiet for a long time so maybe they'll surprise me!

Have to wait until Jan 12, but the rumors of the over representation of Wii U ports (yes that includes Zelda) is not looking good.

Personally, they've become less and less interesting for me over the past two decades or so, the Switch only adds to the same feeling, to be honest. I really, really want to enjoy a Nintendo console again, the last one I owned was a N64, but their quirks and weird solutions and controllers always manage to turn me off, in addition to poor support and tech in the last two generations.

I'm glad OP is feeling it though, I remember you back in the day. It's high time Nintendo's true fans found something to be excited about again.

Really? I found them a lot more interesting 5 years ago.

The courage in Nintendo showing nothing but Zelda in three big events in a row, it is brilliant: if Zelda was not that strong of a title, it is now.
They are like the perfect poker player: not hasty, calm, confident.
Let´s hope they deliver the perfect final strike in the end.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I always find Nintendo interesting, they're not the run of the mill tech/toy  company and I can really appreciate that.

I think switch looks more interesting because it's also the spiritual successor of nintendo handhelds. And nintendo handhelds have always been interesting.
