What is the right thing to do? Choose someone according to their political stance or their merits at the job at hand?

It seems that there is a lot of criticism whenever Trump chooses a democrat or a previous republican rival into his cabinet. Of course, theres the "issue" of voter confidence, by which some of the choices might be seen contrary to the assumed reason why Trumpt supporters voted for him. Thing is, whenever that supposed betrayal happens, you hardly see any Trump supporter being particulary concerned by it. The biggest squeal actually comes from the Anti-Trump camp, even when democrats are being considered. They are so nice looking for the well being of Trump voters, ain't em?

To be fair, its obvious that no matter what Trump does it will be seen in a negative light by many. But why shouln't Trump consider everyone according to their merits first and foremost? Of course I'm not saying that is imposible that there might be uterior motives for some of the choices. Still, I would prefer a President that chooses whom he thinks is the right choice even if they have an opposing stance.

At the very least it means not everyone he chooses is a KKK White Supremacist Neo Nazi.
