Forums - Gaming Discussion - My experience with Skyrim - PC gaming at its worst

So today I started Skyrim for the first time:

1. Game froze on character creation, I had to restart PC because I could not bring up task manager and no key combinations worked, naturally, and spend half an hour googling the problem and preventing it.

2. The audio was very low - I had to google that and waste my time again.

3. Turned out alt-entering and alt-tabbing does not work in this game like it works in any other game released in 1982 and onwards, still figuring out what to do.

I would bet one million us dollars if I had them that I will stumble on more technical problems, and this is a game released 5 years ago.

Answers as far as I can figure.

1: If the game freezes and you cannot ctrl+alt+del it is a graphics card issue. Usually a driver or settings based issue. If you have the hi-res textures you will need more than 3GB of VRAM for it to run smoothly without any crashing. Depending on the other settings you may even need up to 4GB of VRAM, especially if you use NVidias DSR to run the game at more than your existing resolution supports. Oh and of course don't forget to update your drivers to the latest version avaialble from either Nvidia.com or http://support.amd.com/en-us/download.

2: This one is an Audio selection process, I had this issue as well when I first used Skyrim. Skyrim does not like to run at certain hz values on different audio chipsets. Go into Control Panel -> Sound -> Select your audio then click on Properties ->  Select the Advanced tab. Now change thie value for the Default Format. Try out the the 24-bit values starting with the highest quality first and and go down the list. Keep the window open so that you can easily change the vallue then restart skyrim. (If you change this while skyrim is running you can cause a BSOD)

3:And yes, alt+tab does not work well skyrim, and even a few other moderm games have issues with it as well. Typically games that run in Borderless Windowed mode by default will not atl+tab. The work around is to use ctrl+alt+del then select Task Manager.

That's what happens when you play a game on a PC that can only run spreadsheets.

Don't forget Text based emailing! Only text though, you'll need a super powerful expensive graphics card to allow you add pictures and colour!

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Bethesda is famous for this after all...

Not one major issue with Skyrim, over 700 hours on steam.

Install the unofficial patch. It's technically a mod, but it should fix a lot of things. It might not help with some problems you might face, but it should help in many ways anyway.

But yeah, that's definitely a problem. PC gaming by nature has more problems because of the various setups people can have, but mostly it works just fine. It's Bethesda that doesn't seem to mind a few game-stopping bugs, and I think in Bethesda's case they're not that rare on consoles either.

Alt tabbing tends not to work for a lot of those sorts of games, I would suggest window mode if you run into trouble a lot.

Otherwise, I didn't have the problems you listed even when I played it back in December of 2011. Not sure what the problem is.

And thas why most people game on consoles......

I believe this to be an Incorrect statement sir. I would gather that most people play on consoles because it is a much cheaper solution than PCs.

T'wer the prices equal, then it would fall upon the ease of use as the primary reason to go towards consoles.

The fact that consoles are basically plug-and-play (a bit less now, but still) is a big advantage too. You buy your console, plug it, buy the games with the name of your console on it, and you're good to go without a doubt on your config or any other effort. It's easier and overall more consumer-friendly.

I did not deny this fact, I am merely presuming that the biggest factor is price and not ease of use. :)
