Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Jimquisition: Nintendo - Jim Has Some Harsh Words About Nintendo (Nov. 28, 2016)

Copied from gaf thread. Mods can change title of the thread it's not fitting to this site. Thanks.

Nintendo's manufactured scarcity is a commonly known deal, and it's just getting beyond ludicrous.

The NES Classic is the latest farce, shipping to stores in pitiful numbers despite well-known demand.

Basically, Nintendo's a fucked up toymaker thinking everything it makes is a goddamn Hatchimal, whatever the hell THAT is!

I just got done watching it.... I saw a thread on neogaf, and decided to give it a watch.

Jim raises alot of fair points in this.
Nintendo knowingly undership, to create seemingly insane demand, when in fact they only shipped 3 units of the NES Classic (mini) (to that target he was at).

Apparently they do it with games too.

Same sh*t with the amiibo.

Look at the youtube comments:

"Jim spitting straight truth in this video."
"As someone that works at retail Nintendo is the worst, they know they're going to sell hundreds and they give us like 20, we got 40 copies of the new Pokémon, we sold out before noon"
"I work at my local Best Buy's gaming department, particularly in Nintendo's little section. Everybody was asking about the NES Classic. I felt like a broken pull-toy delivering the same line over and over again."
"The same with the small new 3ds. People are scalping those like crazy."
"The short supply is entirely on purpose to create an artificial demand. Nintendo has been doing it since the Wii. It's a slimy corporate policy and desperate marketing ploy which is intended to give them an edge over their competition."
"I just checked amazon and the price is TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY DOLLARS what the FUCK. I thought this would be a cool Christmas present for my Dad, but I guess he can go fuck himself."
"don't forget the $99 new 3ds that sold out immediately"

Is nintendo not that consumer friendly?

Well it might be because they don't know how it will sell. Its not like its difficult to find games like Pokemon, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Zelda etc at launch and after or the regular Mario, Link, Yoshi or Luigi Amiibo. They know those will sell well.

Sales of a product similar to NES Classic is hard to gauge. You must play it safe with such products.

Yet as Jim says in the video, everyone else was posting about how the nes classic would have supply issues before launch. Nintendo themselves should know better then anyone.

Since the 3DS and WiiU, they became overly cautious with the shipments of products, they don't want to overstock, because you loose a lot of money if they don't sell.

That's why you so rarely see Nintendo games in bargain bins, because retailers don't have much Nintendo items on their hands when it's time to empty the stocks.

But I get that Nintendo NES shortage is annoying, but I don't think Internet buzz = sales, and how much buzz = how much units shipped? .

The number of units Nintendo shipped, was a result of market research, they failed in calculating that number.

Yep. They did wrong with the Nes classic and deserves to be pointed for that. I've asked 3 different retailers about the Nes and they don't expect more shipments.

I'm not sure why you're questioning YouTube comments. 90% of them are are people bitching regardless of what you are watching.

Yeah, it doesn't matter what video you're watching the youtube comments always cause seizures.

Whether it's "LEL XBOTS, XBOX720P" or "PAUPERSTATION $ONY" or.... hmmm I can't really think of anything as cancerous for Nintendo.

For some reason I always end up glancing at youtube comments again, and always regret it immediately.

It's a well-known issue that Nintendo underships like hell, to scalpers' joy. That should end, it's just not consumer friendly, it's a bothersome marketing strategy.
