I sure hope that those people went through the delightful trouble of watching Brotherhood and Kingsglaive first. Gives so much more depth when starting playing this game.

For this to be seen as putting FF back on the map and to be seen as truly successful sequel it cannot fall under 90. FFVIII even got a 90 (the lowest rated PS1 FF) and many hate on it.

Either way, review scores mean nothing for franchises like this. Gaming critics give out way too high scores for games with obvious flaws.

I wasn't really claiming FF XV was mediocre, haven't played it. Merely pointing out that gaming critics rarely make sense when reviewing games. If FF XV deserves an aggregate score of 83% than an amazing game should score over a 100%, which is obviously not possible.

My complaint about FF XV is its setting and character design, but those are personal preferences and not flaws with the game (different strokes for different folks).

So is Final Fantasy XV everything it ought to be? For fans, yes. Without question, this is the Final Fantasy game you’ve been waiting for. That's actually surprising given how tumultuous its decade-long development as been. For first-timers, it depends how tolerant you are of narrative failings. Look past that, and you’re treated to fantastic moment to moment gameplay, and an intricate set of systems that will have you coming back for more.

Pros:

  • Great combat
  • Strong characters
  • Flexible progression

Cons:

  • Vague story
  • Unremarkable music
