Forums - Politics Discussion - Why Bernie Sanders wouldn't have won against Donald Trump in the election.

Nah, I think Sanders is great and would be a good president, but Trump would have easily beat him. All he had to do was call him a commie and the masses would panic.

This is probably the truth.

I live in the south and I used to work in a redneck community.  I've seen virtual KKK meetings take place at the tables and had people leave anti-evolution propaganda all over the store.

I tell you now, some of these communities would have been thrown into an absolute panic at the idea of Sanders as president.  The idea that socialism is the same thing as communism is ironclad among the less educated.  All Trump would have to say is that Sanders wants to turn the US into the USSR and that would be that.

Just imagining some of the rants gives me a feeling of nostalgia.  I used to have a blast baiting some of the more extreme customers.

I think Sanders would have been the best choice as our new President. However, I too, believe he would have lost against Trump. He didn't have the strong voice that Clinton or Trump has. Also the US is deathly afraid of Socialism. Talk to a Texan (trust me, I'm a Texan and have seen how they react to anything socialist) and they'll believe that Sanders is the second coming of Hitler. Didn't help he isn't Christian either

I do wonder if Warren can win against Trump either...

Pretty much Trump will use a misogynist campaign and call her a socialist

Sanders had the Anti-Trade Deals Stance that Trump used to win the rust belt. (Let's be honest that's the only way Trump won). Sanders would have taken away his biggest advantage. However Trump could have flipped other places to win Like New Hampshire and Nevada. We won't truly know who won but it definitely would have not been an electoral landslide like this election was.

Why does it matter anyway? I think he would've had a far better chance considering he was also a populist canidate. It could've also turned out worse as he focused more on the more progressive side of the party, and that could've lost the democrats votes. We'll never know either way, but I bet Bernie regrets that endorsement he gave to Hillary right about now.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

There is no correlation between primary performance and general election. You cited Nate Silver and he is constantly saying this.

Sad but true.

Nevermind the fact that Bernie's policies weren't socialistic either :-3

But really though, that some extremists living in the southern states would panic from that wouldn't really matter. Southern states are primarily republican either way.

Hillary played too much  into Identity politics.

Her call to break the glass ceiling did not appeal to me at all.

You are a rich white women.....

Sanders would've won, and Biden would have too (Pennsylvania is off the map right away) and Obama would've wrecked Trump. Any one of those three guys would've won.

It was a very winnable election for the Democrats, Trump was fortunate to run against someone who was almost as unlikable as him in Hillary, that's what kept it close enough for him to turn some traditionally blue states. It was an election between the two most unliked candidates in modern American political history though.

Clinton had too much baggage and wasn't charismatic enough to engage the younger portions of the Obama coalition. She also was an unethusiastic campaigner, whereas you saw the huge enthusiasm at Bernie rallies, that would've spread.

I think Bernie flips Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennslyvania, and perhaps Iowa as well (he, like Obama, did very well there, Clinton has never done well there).

People wanted something different this cycle, Clinton was as establishment as it gets, put Bernie in there and it would contrast how much of an asshole Trump is. Bernie would've done better with indepedents and younger voters, that's enough to find an extra 200k votes between Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennslyvania. I also think he would've been very competetive in Iowa.

The "he's a commie" thing wouldn't have stuck as much IMO. Soviet Union has been dead for 20+ years, it's the equivalent now of "well I just can't see a black guy ever winning the presidency" which people used to say all the time in 2007/08. 20 years ago maybe not, today things have changed.
