People werent interested in getting a Wii U for many reasons, such as bad marketing/advertising, high price & constant software droughts. It wasnt that the games werent appealing, it was that the appealing games were too far and few in between.
3D Mario released a full year after launch, Mario Kart 1.5 years after launch, Smash Bros 2 years after launch, Splatoon 2.5 years after launch, Zelda still hasnt released, no mainline Pokemon titles, no mainline Animal Crossing, etc.
Having 3D Mario, Smash Bros, Splatoon, Pokemon, Zelda, Mario Kart all in its first year means the chances of early success are high.
And no you will not be able to play similar games on your iPhone, thats just a flat out dumb statement.

lol i will. An iPhone 7 (A10Fusion) is WAY stronger then the tegra x1 (pixel c) and most likely also more powerfull then the x2. All three a mobile arm chips so its very compareable. Nvidia was never a market leader in arm chips, apple, snapdragon and samsung are.
BTW.
Wii U exclusives games from the past 4 years:
Pikmen 3
Mario Kart 8
Splatoon
Mario bros U
Mario 3D World

Ok an iPhone 7 is waaaaayyyyyyy stronger, where are the games that compare to the ones you just listed? thats right, they dont exist.
Wii U had plenty of droughts, it usually had a decent holiday quarter but the other 3 quarters usually just had 1 game each.
Nov 2012-Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros U, ZombiU
March 2013-Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Lego City Undercover
August 2013-Pikmin 3
October 2013-Wind Waker HD
November 2013-Super Mario 3D World
February 2014-DKC: Tropical Freeze
May 2014-Mario Kart 8
September 2014-Hyrule Warriors
October 2014-Bayonetta 2
November 2014-Smash Bros, Captain Toad
February 2015-Kirby Rainbow Curse
March 2015-Mario Party 10
May 2015-Splatoon
September 2015-Super Mario Maker
October 2015-Yoshi's Woolly World
December 2015-Xenoblade X
March 2016-Twilight Princess HD, Pokken Tournament
April 2016-Star Fox Zero
October 2016-Paper Mario
You can see that 3-4 month droughts between exclusives was not uncommon at all.
