Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why updated ports make sense for Nintendo fans

Why would they start from scratch? Because they are releasing a new system.

Game engines are also updated and reused on new systems.  And if porting games expedites the learning process of the new system why not use it?

If they are reused then there really is no need to have a learning process then. Its not like making a new game will be less of an experience.

But the Wii U and Switch use different architecture for their hardware so it's not that easy.  And like you said making a new game wouldn't be less of an experience, in fact it would be more and that's part of the point that they want to save time on.

Wii U games had longer development cycles in part due to it being Nintendo's first HD console, with them learning on existing Wii U blueprints they can spend more time on optimization.  That they are working on ports of popular games early on bodes well for the future of those game series or at least those teams that work on them because other parts of the team can focus more on new ideas, art, assets, direction etc, for NEW games while other team members get to know the Switch on the programing side.

I dont even get why are you are trying to argue this, its almost agreed by everyone that PS4/XBO have a steady flow of big releases while Wii U does not.

Because its wrong. its not the number that make ps4/xbox ones a success and wii u a failure.

Its just a handfull of games and other things, like marketing, and reputation.

The ps4 would also be a success with just 50 retail releases, as long those retail releases include games like:

GTA, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Battlefront, Destiny, Divison, Fifa, NBA2k, Madden, Need for Speed, Witcher, Uncharted, Far Cry and co.

Just look up the top 50 selling games basically. Those popular games and franchises sold the console, not the 300 other indie titles,

The Wii U however, got all high hitters nintendo has to offer but a mainline zelda game.

It got a 3D Mario, a 2D Mario Creation Tool, A Pokemon Fighting Game, Mario Kart (Sold more then 30mio last gen) it got 3 Zelda games (2 Remastereds, 1 Spinoff), a brand new IP called Splatoon and co.

All Nintendos Heavy Hitters are on the wii u.

Do you really believe the wii u would be a success if they had released a new Metroid, F-Zero and Animl Crossing game as well ? It hadnt changed much. At best we would see 14mio lifetime instead of 13 mio.

The Games were not Nintendos problem, but bad marketing, bad image (kids console), unattractive priece, lag of third party support were. The Wii brand was already very damaged as Nintendo released the Wii U. Most people that got a wii u used it for some months and then never again, it had bad third party support, bad graphics. All that burned into the minds of most people not to want to buy such a console again.

You really don't know what are you talking about, one of biggest Wii U problems actually was weak launch and 1st year line up and software droughts of 2-3 months, Wii U didn't had must have title or system seller in whole 1st year and did have periods of 2-3 months without any game release (I dont count some Indie craps). Wii U launch and 1st year lineup is probably weakest launch and 1st year lineup for any Nintendo platform (key Nintendo titles were Nintendo Land and NSMB HD), with longest softwares droughts ever.

I would come up with a thought out response but you essentially just agreed with multiple points i made to you earlier.........you literally have no clue what you are arguing about at this point.

this doesnt make any sense. i disproved you again and again, over and over again, and you keep ignoring it. ridiculous

Sry, but you really don't know what are you saying when you say that Wii U didnt have software drought and you even try to compare that with PS1/XB1 releases, bascily night and day comparison, and you even say you prove that. :D

I want all good Wii U games to get upgraded ports on Switch. I skipped Wii U, because it was such an overpriced yet underwhelming console, but there are many games on it I'd like to play and I'd gladly buy on Switch. I guess ports aren't really for that handfull of Wii U users (though many will double dip either way), but for those who ignored Wii U, but liked the Wii should be easy to attract.

This is actually main point why Nintendo is porting great Wii U games to Switch. People need to understand Wii U is huge faile with installed base of only around 13m, but has some great games that many people missed because Wii U failed and beacuse its platform whitout future. So that's why Nintendo is porting great Wii U games to Switch (Sony done that with PS3 games on PS4 even PS3 is not fail), with ports of great games Switch lineup will much stronger and much diversive and beacuse that way more appealing for every person who didn't had Wii U, than it would be without them.

If the XONE and the PS4 can get ports and sell well, The Switch can get ports as well! And most likely sell well too!

Im willing to bet the updated ports of Splatoon, Mario Kart & Smash Bros each sell over 5 million.

Being a PS3 on vitamins (not even steroids) for the price of a PS4. That's a no-no.

You dont even know how powerful the Switch is...

No, but I don't consider it a home console - something I don't need at all, since I've bought a gaming PC for this gen that puts PS4Pro and Xbox Scorpio to shame. To me Switch is Vita 2 and it should be awesome at it, since it'll get all the great Nintendo games that I enjoyed on Wii and missed during the dark days of the Wii U. I will probably be commuting to work quite a bit soon (possibly 2h on a train daily), so Switch will be perfect for me.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

A lot of people are missing an important factor for these ports.  Porting these Wii U games helps the Nintendo teams get familiar with the new Switch hardware and gets Wii U game engines running on Switch hardware which will expedite future releases of NEW games on the Switch in the process.  You got to learn to walk before you run.

So everytime they release a new machine Nintendo is going to port the past library to learn to develop for it?

If that's the case, the company must consider looking for better dev teams or for other areas to expand because they are going to fail hard with that idea.

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

As someone who planned on buying a Wii U the day Zelda released on it (which was delayed years...) The idea has a great deal of appeal to me personally. That said, I get how Wii U owners would not see the value in playing Smash or Mario ports on Switch.

I think if Nintendo does port games they also need to make a point that new titles are coming.

"Hey, we ported SMBU and SM3DL, and we remastered SMG 1 & 2...and here's SMG3!"

That would make me buy a Switch, and I do think there is a large untapped market that would be with me in enjoying ports or remasters along with new entries in beloved series. You have to have that new game as well though, otherwise you have a system with two Zelda remasters (WW & TP) and no new exclusive Zelda, like the Wii U.

Yep like I said in the OP, porting these games potentially allows these teams to get a second project out sooner. Some examples.

From EAD Group 2, you either get Splatoon 2 in Fall 2017 or Splatoon 1.5 at launch & Animal Crossing for Fall 2018

From Sakurai, you either get Smash Bros 5 in Fall 2018 or Smash Bros 4.5 in mid 2017 & a new Kid Icarus in mid 2019.

From EAD Group 1, you either get Mario Kart 9 in Fall 2017 or MK8.5 in Spring 2017 and a new Nintendogs in 2018.

I think alot of people who are upset about these ports dont seem to realize is without them its possible Switch faces a Wii U situation where the big hitters are spread out too far and in some cases too late.
