Not quite, but it ended 20 years ago with the Buu Saga.

I gave up super about 5 episodes in because it just looked so awful. I mean I watched and enjoyed GT.

That said - who is Zamasu? I don't recall him in any TV series prior to super?

Super is complete garbage for the first 27 episodes. Do not watch that!
Feel free to watch the first two movies, which epi 1-27 retells in a painful way...
Or skip directly to Episode 47, which is Future Trunks arc, and it's really really good. They have top class animators hired (an amazing guy who worked on One Piece) for this arc, and it feels like they spent a lot more money on the production value here.

Trunks arc is leages and bounds above anything that came before it in Super, and frankly, it rivals the best Dragon Ball Z ever offered imo.

Zamasu is a new villain. He's like Supreme Kai, but from a different universe.

Thanks for the heads up. I tried to watch the first few episodes but it just wasn't that good. So start from 47...I've been looking for something good to watch so I guess I'll start here. I won't be missing any important details necessary for Trunk's story arc will I?

It's been around longer than that

Wow really? I started watching when Super first came out and got turned off from it very quickly, but now that you say this I'll have to check out the newest episodes!

I love the idea of turnaments in anime (Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, OG Dragon Ball, etc.) And they're brining it back in Super for a seccond attempt, some time after the Future Trunks arc ends. It will be all 13 universes joining in this time. I hope they use the same writers and animators that did the Future Trunks arc for that!
If you want to watch it the first tournament, that's cool and it'll give you an introduction to some of the new elements of Super. But don't let it stop you from giving the Future Trunks arc a chance.

Trunks arc feels very different in terms of quality from the rest.

I'm going to watch the Future Trunks arc. Future trunks is my favorite character.  I was sold on him the second I saw him cut down frieza. Well Mecha Frieza. Fantastic character.

I also liked him in GT.

I would suggest watching the two movies first though. Watch Battle of Gods and Revival of F then jump into the Future Trunks arc. This way you will at least get an introduction to the new Super Saiyan forms, as well as an introduction to Beerus and Whis.

Yeah you can easily skip the rest.
The story of this arc is mainly stand alone, so it can be enjoyed without knowing what happened before, as long as you've watched Dragon Ball Z.
The only thing you need to know is that Beerus is the God of Destruction (which you probably saw already) and Whis is his attendant and teacher, who also trained Goku and Vegeta to use God powers (Super Sayan Blue.)

That's it.

Oh, I'm golden then. Watched Z and the 2 movies. Can't wait to dig into it.
