Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Emily Rogers: Switch has 4GB of ram in RETAIL units, leaked specs might not be farfetched

Wasn't the PS Vita 512 MB RAM, 128 MB VRAM and
New 3DS 256 MB RAM, 10 MB VRAM?

A handheld console with 4GB RAM... isn't it like a major upgrade from what handheld devices had to offer before? How can we expect this thing to clock the bandwidth of its home console counterparts and still be affordable and less energy consuming?

Isn't that like 16 times the RAM in New 3DS and two times the RAM in WiiU?

That would be more than enough.

Yes, it will be enough for their own projects and for most japanese devs's AA - A projects and indies. But western companies are going to have a hard time accepting that..

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Well looks like Switch being garbage is confirmed. RAM has always been Nintendo's hardware weakness. Been that way since the N64. Looks like Nintendo never learned their lesson. I wouldn't be shocked to see it being abandoned by 3rd party devs in a year. Maybe less.

It's going to get Japanese 3rd party support which is what Nintendo truly cares about.. It might also get Fifa and other games like that.

Great for handheld, not great for home console. But did anyone really expect PS4 level power on the go at an affordable price?

I'd argue that's all Nintendo needs. Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, and Battlefield aren't going to save or kill Switch.

So it has the same ram like a Samsung...

I agree. But that makes the western devs on the supporters list rather weak, if all we can expect from them is a couple of games and old ports. But that was my assumption before the Switch reveal anyway.

Now you will tell me by which dark magic you expected the Switch to carry your games on the go with PS4 level power while remaining affordable and not power consuming? You're not even taking into consideration that this is a handheld console first and foremost... taken into context the Switch is immensely more powerful than the PS Vita, the 3DS and the Wii U itself.

4GB is enough for the computational power involved and 1080p. 8GB is useful for 4K gaming and was overspending for the original XBO and PS4.

Well, that's it, then. If true, this alone will result in substantially decreased third-party support. Pretty much every new AAA game has 8GB as a minimum recommendation on PC. That doesn't mean some of those games wouldn't play on a 4GB console system but almost certainly means some of them would not.
