Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why isn't 6 face buttons a standard?

6 primary face button sucks. When your using one digit to press them, it's best to constrain it to up, down, left or right options. 6 (or more) buttons can work better on larger surface using multiple fingers, such as an arcade cabinet or a keyboard.

Eh, 6 buttons is much better for fighters which btw you dont use your thumb for all 6 buttons but use 3 fingers like playing with an arcade stick.
Otherwise the real issue is that more controllers arent made like this

We use our thumbs for alot as is on a controller but dont use 4-6 fingers at all which are perfect for these extra paddles

I've always wondered, can those rear buttons be additional buttons? Or do they have to be mapped to existing ones?

OP knows what he's talking about. Eliminating the 6 buttons from the face was a step backwards and made a lot of fighters unbearable. You can press a button faster with your thumb than with your pointer finger curved about. OG Xbox had it correct, butt it was phat. People say fighters are a dying genre, well NO SHIT. With the way controllers are set up for strong punch, of course nobody wants to play them. Sega Saturn controller made fighting games playable on a normal control pad. D-pad was perfection.

Mapped to existing buttons sadly

4 face buttons is about the limit; any more results in thumb placement confusion. A couple rarely used buttons (or touchpad) in the center works too. What I can't figure out is why we only have two bumpers as standard; we could have four (horizontally placed) plus two standard triggers and be fine.

It's what people are used to the most, adding extras can confuse and annoy people

On the plus side (I don't have this controller but I assume it's still applicable), the Xbox One lets you remap the buttons to whatever you want in the main settings menu. If you want one of those paddles to be something else, I'm sure it's an option.

Because some games using the d-pad as something other that directional inputs was confusing?  How about those RS and LS clickable buttons.

R3 and L3 aren't, nor have they ever been labeled on controllers, and eventually, people figured it out.  Not understanding the "Let's keep things dumbed down for the public" mentality.  This is p[robably why DLC is in such the mess it's in.  Everything is going to waste.

So, recently I got myself a sega saturn, along with mega man 8, astal, and some other stuff., and, it  got me thinking...  What happened to having 6 face buttons on the controllers?  Why is that not a thing anymore?

Because your right thumb, along with with the right analog, has to deal with 4 buttons.

Its "enough" as is.

Your index finger and middle finger already have buttons too.

So does your left thumb.

I think we re at a place where we have enough buttons..... if games need more its because they arnt designed well.
