Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why isn't 6 face buttons a standard?

So, recently I got myself a sega saturn, along with mega man 8, astal, and some other stuff., and, it  got me thinking...  What happened to having 6 face buttons on the controllers?  Why is that not a thing anymore?

It's perfect for fighting games.  Probably would have turned MvC2 into a real six-button fighter if the Dreamcast didn't drop the C and Z buttons.

I like the controller so much, that I'm going to get some converters for it soon.  It also has a good D pad.

But, Sony got into the market because of Nintendo, and Nintendo used diamond arrangements for the face buttons...  I'm also aware of the newer controllers that move the R1 and R1 buttons to the front, but, I would love to see 6 face buttons, and 4 shoulder buttons standard on controllers.

Its perfect for people who owned the Mega Drive/Genesis back in the day, but us who owned the SNES know that the SNES controller is way superior for Street Fighter 2

Simple. Triggers+analog presses eliminated the need for two additional face buttons, and even so, many genres that could use a 6-button arrangement are now dying (e.g fighters).

4 buttons is easier for most people. You have the thumb in the middle of all four and need to barely move it to get to any button. Another row of buttons would complicate things since you would then have to jump over buttons, increasing the risk of pressing the wrong one, not to mention the comparably long ways.
With the addition of shoulder buttons, it made the need for more buttons obsolete anyway.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I never found 6 face button controllers comfortable/fluent moving my thumb from button 1 straight to button 3 or 6.

I don't want to think that hard.

Ecept I've played it on both consoles, and didn't like using my left pointer to do heavy punch attacks.  Trying to do specials that was is even more difficult.  Which is why you'd use both of the right shoulder buttons.

Fighters are not dying, and we haven't had a 6 button controller since the saturn.  MKX did fine, Tekken 7 is doing great in arcades, Street Fighter 4 broke sale records, and DoA5 is doing alright, or else there wouldn't be $1,000 in DLC for that game.  But, only Street Fighter 4 & 5 are 6 button fighters

I haven't used a 6 button controller in years (8+) and never had that issue.

Aside from fighting games, there aren't many genres that really need it. Modern controllers have 4 face buttons, 4 trigger buttons, two joysticks that could be clicked to serve as extra buttons, and the dpad can also function as 4 buttons. We already have enough buttons.

The only one I`ve used was the original Xbox controller with the black and white buttons as well as the regular ones. Considering how little they were actually used I`m not surprised at all that they aren`t put on controllers anymore.

I was going to say the same thing, basically.

Eh, 6 buttons is much better for fighters which btw you dont use your thumb for all 6 buttons but use 3 fingers like playing with an arcade stick.
Otherwise the real issue is that more controllers arent made like this

We use our thumbs for alot as is on a controller but dont use 4-6 fingers at all which are perfect for these extra paddles
