Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will USB-graphics cards lead to the end of home consoles?

to the OP question, Nope it won't, will still be nice option for someone who doesn't mind packing this extra kit for multiple cheap laptops... I guess this is the customer? would someone not just purchase a "gaming" laptop instead of this though?

Gaming laptops have weaker GPUs than desktop counterpart.

They'll work on anything with a CPU in time.

CPU power doesn't seem to be limiting game development.

Consoles will die eventually, and be reborn as something else in the future. What that will be is up to future software and hardware engineers. 50 years from now, consoles will probably be USB sticks (if usb is still around) that you put in your TV. Physical media will be long gone. Remember when we thought Blockbuster would never die?

Soon, graphics cards will be the size of SD cards. It's just how technology goes.

Just to make sure there no confusion it actually require Thunderbolt 3 to work. Thunderbolt 3 uses a USB-C cable but just because there a USB-C slot on your device does not mean it supports Thunderbolt 3.

My PC's CPU from a few years back still more than meets minimum CPU requirements for 2016 PC games, and my RAM normally also meets minimum requirements. So the only thing that drives any desire for a new PC is the GPU. and because of the motherboard on the PC I can't just slap a newer GPU in there. If I could get a plug in GPU I'd be all set for some time to come.

Short answer NO.

Long Answer Hell NO. thinking they could replace consoles shows a lack of understanding of what makes a console so attractive for many buyers. Sure this setup could become popular for a niche group but it is unlikely to be a console replacement, perhaps for some it will become a lowend PC replacement.

Wait so why is the CPU not a bottleneck?

CPUs seem to have peaked at core i5s from 5-6 years ago.

Even i7s are overkill for current games.

Certainly true for desktops, not so true for laptops though. Also you aren't going to find USB-C /thunderbolt port on ANY old laptop or desktop.

What is problematic about the motherboard? You would still need thunderbolt 3 though and if it's an old computer then you're out of luck i'm afraid.

What motherboard do you have which allows you the cpu power to run modern games but doesn't feature a PCIE port? Little confused here.

I'm still waiting for OnLive to kill consoles. Remember when that was supposed to happen? Or all the other times consoles were supposed to die? I mean, to hear some people say it in years past, we shouldn't be playing on consoles right now. Print books and home video were already supposed to be completely dead and buried by now as well. Needless to say, I don't put much stock in claims that such and such is going to kill so and so.

What about when Video killed the radio star though? at least some of these claims create fantastic songs!

interesting.
I wonder if I can use a Raspberry pi with this.
A tablet, laptop, phone, etc I would still use in other thinks, Id like something dedicated to my tv.

Maybe a company could sell a cheap box with a compatible CPU compatible with steam and windows, and slot for a GPU, with easy conection and interface...
