Thing is, I don't think UB's will last forever. I also don't think they'll remove gyms forever as well. Perhaps they simply realized Hawaii is different and wanted to add something unique to the world and plotline?

I heard that you can actually catch/trade/battle UBs. If that's the case, I'm fearing the worst. Otherwise, I too don't think they'll last forever and gyms are obviously going to return in some future game. The reason these changes are fine is because they're merely changes to this one specific game - the same applies to everything regarding the region itself, the story, and all that stuff.

Edit: that's the reason I don't hate generation 4 to this degree, for example. D/P were games that I absolutely disliked because of the extremely slow gameplay, the confusing region and a story I never cared about - but apart from some really crappy evolutions for older Pokémon, they never did anything terrible for the franchise as a whole (if anything, they added the Physical/Special split which was a very necessary change).

I guess Sun/Moon doesn't catch your appeal for some reason. Not the end of the world.

Even if you have the things you dislike, I don't think your points were big enough to make you not get the game. I'm sure it'll still be an enjoyable experience for you.

Wow that's quite impressive, those sales numbers are going to be interesting.

What is Pokemon meant to be? In case I'm wrong Pokemon is simply the term for Pocket Monsters. it has always changed. New types, IV's, EV's, Mega evolution, Z-moves, double battle, 2d to 3d, new villians, etc etc. If we kept the pokemon you envisioned, this game would be nowhere near the success it is having. Leaving Japan was a great decision for Gamefreak. they could've done more with france, but for Hawaii it's obvious they paid attention. the world is huge, we can now have travel pokemon, and Pokemon snap has "returned" by being a new feature. If you ask me, this change is great.

Now with Sun/Moon, there were A LOT of huge changes like Mega Evolution (UBs, Z-moves, Alola Forms and the lack of gyms altogether), to the point where it just becomes weird and hard to accept for a lot of people. I actually know a lot of friends who were super hyped for Sun/Moon and eventually grew to the point of disgust just like I have, and that's because all of them, and myself, feel like they no longer know the same franchise.

First of all, you didn't even mention the biggest changes: no more grid movement, dynamic camera angles, realistic proportions of character models, realistic sizes of buildings, cities actually looking like cities, trainers visible in battles, better attack animations, more fully rendered 3D Pokémon in the overworld, better animations in general, real interaction between Pokémon outside of battles (Ride Pokémon, which means the REMOVAL of the much hated HMs), etc.

You might wonder what all these things have in common, it's very simple actually: immersion. Pokémon Sun & Moon's big focus is to bring more immersion to the Pokémon series and it is doing so fantastically.

Alola Forms aren't a radical change at all: it's based on evolutionairy principles that island climates have a unique biodiversity compared to the mainland. It's part of the theory of EVOLUTION. You know, the whole freaking principle Pokémon is based upon? It's a natural evolution of the series and a very clever idea. It makes the Pokémon world feel more alive and dynamic and gives us more background information on Pokémon. I really like to read WHY these Pokémon have changed the way they did and how they adapted to their new environment. All the Alolan Forms are also from the first generation: it's quite clear what Gamefreak's intentions are: fan-service and attracting nostalgic people who grew up with the first generation. This will actually lure the people back who dropped out after the first or second generation. And if you don't like them you can simply ignore them; nobody's forcing you to catch them. There's plenty of new Pokémon to catch.

The Z-moves are no big deal really... They're just eye candy: flashy attack animations to impress the player. If you don't like them then don't use them... You'll still be able to play the singleplayer campaign of the game just fine without them (and mega-evolutions). And it's not like the inclusion of Z-moves is going to ruin the online battle-system anyway. And if it does, I'm sure Gamefreak will balance things out like they always do.

We don't know enough yet about the Ultra Beasts to say what kind of effect it will have on the franchise. It might be a stark departure from the original formula, but that doesn't necesarrily mean it's going to be bad. Pokémon is notorious for having crappy, forgettable, simple and bland stories. This should change things up for the better imo. I've already forgotten pretty much everything about X/Y. Honestly, those games were meh, not ambitious enough.

And lastly, it's about time they got rid of the Gym mechanic, it got boring and stale very quickly. Gym battles didn't even feel special: Gym Leaders were just slightly stronger than ordinary trainers. There's really nothing good about gyms: they're just trainer battles... And there's still plenty of trainer battles left in the game. The Trials offer new gameplay elements and more diversity: it's something that's radically different compared to standard trainer battles, so it stands out more. It leaves more of an impression on the player. The concept of Gyms should have been abandonned after the second generation.

It's about time the franchise started to make some decent changes... No other franchise has been able to get away with such incremental updates for each new game... Well, besides Monster Hunter that is.

And you're wrong that these changes scare away a lot of people, in case you weren't aware: you're in a thread about how Pokémon Sun & Moon became the most pre-ordered Nintendo game ever. It's looking very likely that this will be one of the most succesful Pokémon generations since the first two generations.

Yeah. Pokemon XY/Z anime ending on a high note with the upcoming Sun and Moon anime on the horizon, the return of Red, Blue, Cynthia, and Wally, the starter's final evolutions being confirmed, new features for possible post-game content, etc. Not to mention the great news that Gen 6 and the 3DS are getting an extra boost due to Pokemon Go. Sun and Moon is riding high for a potential great holiday.

Yep! I really love what they've done.

I'm only gonna reply to this part and go to bed because I was done with this discussion already anyways.

You're wrong about gyms being boring and something that should have been changed long ago. If you truly think that way, then I'm sorry to say it but you never liked Pokémon. Pokémon was always about the battles. You catch them, you raise them, you trade them, whatever you do - it was always to end up duking it out in Pokémon battles. That's what Pokémon was always about, and hopefully will always be about. The gyms were the big moments where you had to prove you got better at battling, and had the strongest trainers around.

Pokémon was never about running around and taking pictures. That's fine as an extra feature, but it doesn't mean it should replace gyms forever. Even then, I do believe it's an interesting change for one game specifically - however, the gyms should (and will) return, because they are the essence of what Pokémon is.

And that's exactly where gyms failed: they weren't/aren't big moments. I have never lost to a gym leader, I have never even struggled against one... I can one hit most of their Pokémon easily because they have retarded A.I. and only use one type which means you can just spam the same moves to win instantly. You act like gym battles are like boss battles in a God of Wars game. There's NOTHING that differentiates gym battles from ordinary battles. That's why they need to get rid of them forever... You still BATTLE during Trials by the way, but now they're actually memorable moments. I honestly don't see the problem.

Gyms suck ass and that's the truth. If you considered gym battles big moments then I don't know what to tell you honestly. Who said trials was all about running around and taking pictures anyway? That was one trial in the demo...

Gyms aren't the essence of Pokémon at all, it's what's holding the franchise back.

lol you remind me of the SM3D World haters when the initial trailers released. You have extremely nitpicky criticisms, wait until the game arrives lol.

Also the XY anime is one of the best animes out of the Pokemon series (barring championship episode), and I think Ash-Greninja is a great concept. And so does many other adults, not just 6-year-olds like you claim. Calm down with your assumptions boi.

Everyone's going to have opinions before, during, and, especially, after games are released. I'm sure you had your share of nitpicks about the latest Smash Bros. (its an example). Most are enjoying the latest Smash game because of its new features (i.e., 8-player Smash, Smash tour, Miis, etc.), new stages, and the all-time great crossover roster that may never happen again. Others might be critical of its pace, mechanics, being less technical than Melee, smaller single-player content, etc.

And you've mentioned Super Mario 3D World. People are still debating whether its a "true" 3D Mario game, which is kinda ridiculous in the bigger picture since its still one of the best received games (let alone exclusives) in this gen.

There's bound to be nitpickers for Pokemon, especially those who are long-time fans. Some, including me, enjoyed XY (and it has surpassed BW in terms of LT sales) despite some fans nitpicking the story, the lack of post-story features, less Pokemon for the new region, etc.

fyi, I greatly enjoy Smash 4 as a game. I was actually pretty hyped pre-release and I'd argue that I follow the Smash 4 competitive scene more than anyone in this site (let alone the Melee scene lol). Of course in my perspective, Smash 4 will always be inferior to Melee mechanic/competitive wise because the fact is that it's just slower in every way. I knew that, but I don't let it affect how I view it overall as a game, as I love Smash 4 and I don't mind most of the competitive aspect of it either (zzz camping Sonics).

I think some people are going overboard with all these Sun and Moon criticisms, like seriously wait until you read the entire book instead of judging it on its cover.
