Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Rumor: Nintendo Switch Will Support Micro SDXC Cards Up To 128GB In Capacity

The "toaster" doesn't add power, so I doubt NS will be able to get close to the XBox One even.

You'll get a boost from full clock (rather than battery constraint), but that's not going to magically make the system like double or triple the power.

Memory bandwidth is going to be an issue here, LPDDR4 RAM isn't magically going to become GDDR5 RAM just because you have a toaster dock.

I'd expect graphics about double a PS3/Wii U honestly in real world games. For a portable device that's pretty good.

Game sizes should be in line with PS3/360/Wii U games, not much bigger than that. PS3/360 games are way smaller than their PS4/XB1 counterparts, NBA 2K on PS3 is like 8GB versus 40GB on the PS4, lol.

Its expected that games will work at 720p in handheld mode but at 1080p in docked mode (at least for Nintendo games).

People need to realise that 3DS "officially" supports max 32GB MicroSD SDXC but in reality its suport even 128GB when you format card to FAT32, So same thing will be for Switch, oficaly 128GB but formated to FAT32 you will be able to use 1TB MicroSD.

That's assuming that Nintendo will continue to use FAT32. FAT32 has a 4GB-per-file limit, so it will likely exFAT instead, which can handle much, much larger file and volume capacities.

It will be same like 3DS/Wii, u using 128GB SDXC currently in my Wii U, I am sure that on Switch you will be able to use bigger card than 128GB.

That'll be $299.99 for your Nintendo Switch ... and $399.99 for your 1TB Micro SD Card sir, how would you like to pay?

I think some ppl still misunderstand the criticism. Assuming NS is planning to get 3rd party support (FF7r, dark souls, bethesda rpg), how is NS gon handle AAA game digital download? Most games now require more than 30gb and the price of high capacity sd card is really expensive. For comparison, 128gb sd card cost roughly the same as 1tb hhd.

I guess i shouldnt expect those titles to come to NS

Offcourse we should expect micro sd in the Switch.. its also doubles as a handheld/tablet..?

If the limit is 128 G.. thats fine..

Even if you dont have any microsd.. I bet that the internal memory can store a game to "the go".. whit 128G you can have a lot.. And we know it will be easy to tranfer between usbstik/drive when docked... not a problem..

Added..

When I think about it.. It will proberly use bluetooth to tranfer.. So it will not even have to be docked..

Or as I think about that.. :) Nintendo will proberly only allow tranfer when docked.. So that Switch dont risk to run out of battery while tranfering.

Plenty of game carts may leave empty space available to write, so patches wouldn't need space on console/SD card.
For those that need extra space, you have flexibility to store it on internal memory or whatever SD card you prefer.

It does sound like physical "carts" will have advantages here, but I don't really have a problem with that...
And over the lifetime of the console, prices on SDXC cards should drop, and 512GB+ sizes should get reasonable.
Now just hoping that it is at least close to Xbone/OG.PS4 power at least in toaster mode.

i been saying this for over a year and more so hoping it happens. Gettig sick of PS hdd upgrades and uninstalling games then backgin them up an then findindg out some updates no longer available if you want to play the game once again.

And this is what I completely don't understand. What about Nintendo's reveal made people think the Switch will be home to massive AAA third party titles seen on PS4/X1? Better yet, what about Switch made people think that it was ever Nintendo's focus to get Red Dead Redemption 2 and the like on their platform?

No hardcore Battlefield 1 fan is running to the Switch version which will performs between 480p-720p whilst looking like a PS3 game, never hitting 60Fps and most importantly excluding all of their friends who are on one of the established online ecosystems (PSN, Xbl). Even if developers did throw all their might at the Switch, most of their multiplatform games would flop into oblivion. Anyone who has the Switch as their sole current gen system is not massively interested in Red Dead Redemption 2, Mass Effect Andromeda etc and those who are belong to a tiny minority who are not going to make it a huge success on the platform, long term this means withdrawn support from those type of games.

I'm sure Nintendo is counting on third party support, and Third parties are looking to support Nintendo but it won't be in the way many people on here seem to be hoping. January's event could prove me wrong but from Western developers I'm betting on...

Last gen ports/remasters: GTA V, Skyrim, Biohock Collection

E for Everyone (generic audiences): Fifa, Need for Speed, Skylanders, Garden Warfare, Just Dance, Call of Duty, Titafall

Exclusives: New (quirky & small budget) IPs, Mobile ports/remakes , anything Nintendo wants to money hat.

I'll add the importance of third party support is disminished with a successful gimmick, it has always been dimished on Nintendo handhelds and is even further dimished when this gimmick means Nintendo have a more steady output.

1 - Am I being stupid by pointing out that cartridges means games won't need to be installed?

2 - DLC could be added to the cartridge, no?

3 - Cartridges (SD cards in disguise) could be 512GB

4 - Can the current 128GB limit be updated later for 256 and 512?

1. No this is pretty much the only thing of sense you say in this entire thread.

2. I highly doubt that the cartridges will be rewritable, for both cost and security reasons.

3. No.... no they couldn't. Game Cartridges will be 64gb tops, 512gb for storage (even if you're talking multiple micro sd cards) would set you back about £160.... you could get a 3tb HDD for nearly half that.

4. Potentially... as far as I'm aware the larger micro sd cards that currently exist don't require specific hardware, a software update could potentially allow bigger cards, the problem is cost... a 256gb Micro SD will currently set you back £130..... you could get a 4tb HDD for less then that.

nowhere near enough. Even if you factor in that most of those games will be rendered at 540p and will have garbage textures, it will still eat through 128GB in no time.

A single cart could hold upto 10x PS4 games @ 50GB/game.

No... it couldn't... there's literally no way a 500gb cartridge will be anywhere near cost effective during the lifespan of the Switch.

Devs have a huge userbase between the PS4/XB1/PC ... having to make a "special" version just for the NS which is 1/3 the size and running on a processor that honestly is maybe half an XBox One (at best) is going to be a "thanks, but no thanks" for a lot of devs.

That userbase will soon be splitting into PS4/PSPro-VR/PS5/XB1/Scorpio/XBVR/PC/PC-VR.

Lots and lots of timely and costly development, for what? CoD and FIFA in 4K and some kinectywaggle-minigames in VR?

There's so much wrong with this post I don't know where to begin, I don't think I really need to say anything.

Until this news, it was very much still in the cards.

1 - You still have to swap disks on the PS4 and XBone, no?

2 - You do know there was a time when you swapped a game out and it would play instantly without installing? We're going back to those times. I don't get how people can turn 'the end of half day installations' into a negative. There is a reason most people play consoles instead of PCs and this is one of them.

1. No... afaik there is currently NO game on the PS4/XBO that uses multiple disks.

2. I've literally never encountered a situation where I've put a ps4 disk in for the first time and not been able to play it within 30 seconds... half day installations...

GTA IV - 16GB
x4
GTA V - 65GB
x4
GTA VI ~ 260GB

That's..... I don't think that's how it works.

Pyro as Bill said:
MW3(2011) - 7.5GB
x17
IW/MWre(2016) - 130GB
x17
CoD(2021) ~ 2,200 GB
45 Bluray disks

Ok.... that's DEFINITELY not how it works.

Thank you for the entertaining and bewildering posts... I mean... half day installations.... all your posts in this thread have been entertaining satire. I hope...
