Obamacare is pretty awful. For instance, my dad has insurance through his employer, and they've jacked up their premiums considerably thanks to Obamacare. His take home pay is about half of what he actually makes once taxes, insurance, and his small 401k payment come out. He's been forced to take a second job just to make ends meet, so he ends up working like 50-60 hours a week now, at his age.

And what does he get for all that money he pays? Insurance with a deductible so high that it doesn't get met in a typical year, so the insurance is useless for anything except an emergency situation such as an extended hospital stay or an in-patient surgery.

Is his insurance high because of Obamacare or is it just high.  The company I worked for shopped around for the best deal for its employees and my insurance did not go higer from pre to post Obamacare.  Actually because of the amount I use to pay went down, I put that money into my HSA account instead.  Everyone experience will be different but I do wonder if people and corporation are actually shopping for the lowest best coverage.

Not only they only have one company available

The UK national health service certainly needs reform and that reform is really scaling it back to an affordable level as we aren't as rich as we were. It has a solid foundation though and is much loved by the population. Knowing loved ones and yourself have access to health care is a pretty good feeling I have to say and reading this thread has made me appreciate it more.

Even with pets you sometimes hesitate to take them to the vet because of the expense or are faced with monthly insurance payments. Sometimes you come across vets clearly motivated by money more than helping the animal and you have to find a competent vet who doesn't charge huge prices. That pretty much sounds like america's human healthcare system on a small scale. That's as much private healthcare I want to deal with. I have used the NHS throughout my life both accidents and illnesses and it has improved the quality of my life.

Did or did not the Republican party fix the health care system when they were in power?

no.  And that's not related to how much worse than what we had this is.  Better to do nothing than this.

That's not how it works if you think of it that way ...

There's very few ways for the GOP to repeal or even reform ACA since they do not have control of both the executive branch and both chambers of congress (senate and house of representatives). When a bill or a piece of legislation is proposed, you currently need at least 60 votes in the senate to prevent a filibuster and a majority vote in the house of representatives along with the president to sign the bill in order to pass the law. The other way to pass law without the president is for both chambers of congress to get at least 2/3 porportion of votes of which the GOP has NEVER controlled over 2/3 of the senate or the house of representatives for god knows how long ...

That's the pain of practicing the whole separation of powers thing ...

Oh please, as always, it's the "blame Obama" narrative.

Look at the-pi-guy's chart here:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8120078

Obama got into office in 2004. From 1999 onward, healthcare was already rising. Which was before Obama was even in office let alone before he created the Affordable Care Act. FIVE years before

I like how people like to overlook certain facts with the usual smear attempt to blame Barrack Obama. Everyone also seems to forget that the Affordable Care Act brought over 20 million new jobs to the country as well as got health coverage to people that needed it and couldn't afford it.

There are plenty of things you can critique the president on. Which is why I don't see why people like to exaggerate the Affordable Care Act. Especially when healthcare premiums were rising BEFORE HE EVEN GOT IN THE OFFICE anyway.

I don't know much about your healthcare system but sometimes taking one step back... Who knows the changes this ultimately will bring.

Yes? Maybe my times are off, but I can think of 3-4 major Republican congressman that put together plans only to get shut down. Obama vetoed legislation that would have repealed Obamacare and replaced it. There was no one shining solution, but to say that Republican just sat on their hands is dishonest.

This does always make me laugh.

Obamacare got some of previously uninsured population access to health care. That's good.

Obamacare legislated that pre-existing conditions could not deny you employer health coverage. That's excellent.

Literally everything else wasn't good for everyone else. I'm sure if I looked for more than anecdotes, it'd be a staggering number, but I know so many young people who chose to avoid getting health insurance because it was more expensive. Better off rolling the dice and paying the fine versus having to pay the jacked up premiums.
