Forums - Politics Discussion - Religious people understand the world less, study suggests

This is obviously false.

The biggest deniers of global warming are typically religious people, so if they actually thought inanimate things (such as glaciers) had feelings then they`d be doing everything they can to protect them.

Glaciers are the exception.  They're cold-hearted.

there are people who still believe the earth is flat? :S

I seriously wish I were joking. It deeply saddens me that this is a thing with people now.

I guess there are even worse people like that. There is a german documentation called "Die Mondverschwörung" (moon conspiracy) about certain believers and conspiracy theorists where people believe that we live inside the earth on so on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollow_Earth

I have no actual words to describe that.

Again very surprised people are putting so much stock in a study that only polled 258 people, I'm sure if the opposite were stated from the study that many of you here would be ripping the sample size to shreds ...

I'd argue that certain religious people not only have a great understanding of the world but a much MORE profound understanding of the world than some people who aren't religious at all.

What's the argument for this?

The argument is that people who aren't spiritual, and who don't believe in anything beyond what their limited scope can comprehend, have a much harder time finding peace in their lives. The cause of all suffering is want. Freeing yourself of want is really the only path to inner happiness. People who aren't spiritual, on the whole, spend their entire lives amassing goods. Better cars, bigger homes, nicer cloths, higher paying jobs, better, more expensive food etc... and this drive is based on want. They want to be happy, and they foolishly and continually think that all of those things will achieve their goal. They can't understand why they're so unhappy.

There's a saying I once heard. Something like "What good is it to gain the world yet forfeit your soul"? I think it's in the Bible, but the point is valid. Whether or not the "soul" is a real thing in a traditional sense or not, anyone who has a deep understanding of these religious/spiritual pilosophies is bound to have a much better grasp of the world than someone who's only interest is making more money.

Only if they noticed it.  Religious people are 55% more likely to drink Diet Coke!  More like Jesus Coke.

I didn't pay attention to the source, so I don't know how strong the findings are.  If it's a small difference, this may be pretty meaningless.

Even if the numbers weren't meaningless, the findings are. Who cares if someone personifies things?

So in other words this is naught but supposition on your behalf. Moving on then. Next time bring facts.

A question to consider would be: Correlation or causation?

This.

Statistics can be used to prove anything, as long as you know your audience jumps to conclusions.
