Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo is committing a lot of the same lethal mistakes they did with the WiiU, and more.

Yeah. I can't really say why Switch is so successful. I see many groups of gamers the Switch does appeal to, but most of them should've been also into WiiU. And Switch finds another group, as proven by the sales of Indies. Although WiiU was a great system for platformers, as is the Switch, Indies did not by far as well, even the many platforming Indies. So obviously Nintendo tapped into some group of gamers, that aren't shying away from the small downloadable titles. And I'm not sure what this group is. But yes, this all shows, forum dwellers like me don't really understand why the WiiU failed. Yes, I see the higher appeal of the Switch, but I had a WiiU anyway.

The big question is "why does the Switch sell so much better than the Wii U when their libraries are so similar"?  And the main answer is that if you look at the sales curves, the Switch actually sells very similarly to the 3DS.  That means that right now Switch is selling like a handheld, because mostly people in the handheld market are buying it.  (Switch is actually selling a little better than the 3DS for a variety of smallish reasons.)  The one main reason the Switch is selling though is that it is mostly selling to the handheld market.

Disagree some what on it selling like a handheld I think we're still quite a way from that point due to pricing still being with in console range as remember the 3DS itself struggled its initial price point, the main reason imo  is that it has established itself as a device that fits around your gaming habits whether as a primary or secondary platform for your needs or as a portable or home console. The result is both consumers from home console and portable markets are buying it for this reason for example some people may not have as much time for console gaming as they used to due to moving around for what ever reason but aren't into portable gaming before due to the type of games in that section of the market but picked up the NS as they can still play games like Doom, Skyrim, BOTW and so on while away from home.

Unlike the Wii U NS not only has a clear established identity in what it is and what it brings it both has enough to make it unique in its own right while also having enough to satisfy the traditional market leading to it being an appealing product.

To the people that don't know what makes a console successful. It's very simple. You can believe me if you want, and if you don't, don't. But it is the truth. As a person who's been studying the console wars for decades, it comes directly from Satoru Iwata at his peak.

One little word: MOMENTUM..

that's literally ALL.

Nintendo is still making a lot of big mistakes with the Switch:
- After almost 2 years still no streaming apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime
- Still no Internet browser
- Games consists mostly of overpriced ports
- Disastrous voice chat applications
- No messaging system or activity hub
- No virtual console (no, overpriced Wii U ports don't count)
- Expensive as hell hardware/controllers

In many regards the Switch is even a downgrade compared to Wii U, but the portability somehow makes Nintendo immune to the negativity like they are some sort of Jesus.

You're right, the system doesn't have a Browser, messaging system or dedicated virtual console for old games (which you complain about in the same post where you complain about the system having old games) The rest of the items in this aren't correct, some changed in the last month such as Fortnite which natively supports voice chat with no outside apps, some changed last year such as Video streaming via NicoNico TV which is how I watch most of my WWE Raw/Smackdown on the Switch each week, the system has always had an activity hub, oh yeah... controllers for the system cost 70e... the Elite controller for the X1 costs more than double that. Gaming costs money.

Also the most recent long digital foundry vid on the switch in portable mode even features a section on Bayonetta 2 being better on the Switch even in portable mode than on the WiiU.

But yeah... if this hasn't sank in with you in the last year and a half it probably never will.

So, you can use just a headset, or talk right into the system like the Vita? Either or is fine. Both would be preferred. That's a good thing for sure. The voice chat thing is easily my #1 problem with the system. But this is just with Fortnite at the moment? It's a promising step at least. I'm not big multiplayer guy, but I do play multi a bit more in recent years. It's not just a nice feature to have, but is almost required for some games.

a phone headset which has a mic in the same 3.5mm jack will work perfectly into the switches audio jack or if you have a PC usb headset you can put that into the dock and chat away, I've used 2 different PC headsets with no issue. Actually if you use a OTG USB-C adapter you can use a full form USB headset directly into the handheld Switch.

Look at the second chart.  You'll see the shape of the curves is quite similar.

Their libraries are very similar?Where?

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Xenoblade X and Xenoblade 2 are missing, also two very similar games. And please don't tell me 1 or 2 games can make such a big difference in sales, because that is of course BS.

TC is salty, wrong and horribly biased. Still trying to compare the Switch to the PS4? Still calling it underpowered? Still calling it expensive?

How much did you pay for your PS Vita on launch, and why did you buy it if it was not comparable to the home consoles game libraries, was underpowered when compared to them, and still expensive?

Oh wait, yeah, I know the excuse: "B-buh the Vita was a handheld dude!"

Well, as handheld portable device, the Switch has infinitely more handheld games than either the PS4 or XBOX One. This kind of biased argumentation works both ways.

Switch is nothing like the Wii U. For a start, it's a handheld and not a weird wire tethered dual screen system. Second, unlike the Wii U which was effectively little bit more than an XBOX 360 and therefore clearly unable to play competitively as a console, Swirch's strongest rival in the handheld department remains the Vita (and arguably the New 3DS) and compared to these it is a real generational leap. Zero comparison.

Here, watch this.It is very enlightening:

And if you say that XC 2 and XC X are similar games, then you clearly havent play either of them, probably much like the rest of both libraries.

And for games not covered in the video: Octopath traveler, which is anything like any console have, Mario Tennis Aces which is a completely different beast compared to Ultra Smash, Labo (for better or for worse), Super Mario Party, which is a return to form, Pokemon Lets go (again, for better or for worse), and so on.
