Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 6 reasons to be hyped and a few to worry about the NS

RE: https://techcrunch.com/2016/10/21/six-reasons-to-be-hyped-for-the-nintendo-switch-and-four-reasons-to-worry/

Yesterday saw the introduction — after many leaks and rumors — of the Nintendo Switch, the company’s next game console. It isn’t due to arrive until March of next year, which is infinitely frustrating because it looks amazing for several reasons, not all of them obvious. Here’s why I’m more excited about the Switch than for any Nintendo product in a long time.

The Wii was a blast, and sold like hotcakes. But the Wii U was a strange and some would say lazy upgrade that attempted to squeeze more money out of the same ideas. In the end, their entire strategy was compromised and they lost both players and games. The Switch jettisons all that baggage, cutting things off clean except for useful accessories (more to come) like the Pro Controller.

This fresh start means Nintendo can start a completely new dialog with gamers, developers and consumers, all of whom have been somewhat abandoned over the last few years.

Go read the article for the rest. He makes some good points and is a good short read overall. Though I think one of his worriesome points, is a non-issue. This will have multi-touch display without a stylus.

I think provided it has a reasonable price and a good battery life, it will do well! If the battery life is under 5 hours... I would be on the esssh train but we have yet to know about that.

I am so far liking what they produced. It looks quite neat and I am quite excited for it. Hopefully they don't mess this one up!

I wouldn't care about the mediocre battery life if they give us the ability to use portable batteries. Just the other day I saw a 4000 mAh battery at Target for 10 bucks. It'd be great to have compatibility with portable batteries.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

Yea but I don't want to carry a charger around with it or keep thinking about charging it every couple of hours... Its 2016, it's using Nvidia's most efficient arch that handles great with Performance/Watt. There should be zero reason in this day an age that we can't get a decent battery on a 6 inch tablet...

I feel like 5 hours would be great battery life for a handheld that is expected to do the games it is going to do. After one year my phone can do 1- 1.5 hours max of a game on medium brightness.

Good article.

I know many thinks touchscreen is a given, but I'm not so sure. The Switch seem to be a system where third parties can just port over their games without having to think about how they must tweak the gameplay to fit the different gameplay options. It seem like Nintendo really want it to be as painless as possible for third parties this time. After the WiiU they have to be very accommodating to anyone who might want to put their games on the Switch.

3 hours for the types of graphics Nintendo was showing is pretty darn good to be honest.

Tegra X1/X2 is not a joke, it's a monster of a chip for a *mobile* chip, the battery you would need to power that for more than 3 hours would be ridiculous in size.

People also think "well my tablet gets like 8 hours". No it doesn't. Not under heavy gaming, it's maybe half that in that case. You get 8 hours doing low processing power tasks like surfing the internet or dicking around on Youtube.

Latest rumors are pointing 3 hour battery life.

The chip in the NS is so powerful for a mobile it needs a FAN, lol, anyone expecting more than 3 hours is crazy. You can even see in the video there are cooling vents on the top side of the unit (to the right of the cartridge slot).

This chip destroys what's in the Vita.

I think it's a smart move from that POV in that a "in between" portable isn't going to work great anymore. Tablets/phones can play "good enough" games already.

For Nintendo to take the dedicated portable market to the next level in a world of tablets/smartphones means drasitically changing the definition of a dedicated portable and what it can do. And that is basically making a portable console.

Ummm... Not from a usability standpoint... People can say how impressive it is all they want but it is going to get rekt in the reviews and public perception if it is only 3 hours. If it ain't at least 5, most people won't like that aspect at all and it is important enough to be a deal breaker. It was one of the biggest complaints of the wiiU gamepad.

Considering it is a new very efficient arch and it is meant to be portable, if they don't have a battery that lasts 5+ hours... Then they goofed it.
