Forums - Nintendo Discussion - RUMOR: Switch has Touchscreen, More Powerful When Docked, & Mediocre Battery Life

Even if true, that could mean there's nothing more than an upscaling chip/HDMI processing chip in the base.

It doesn't mean that it's going to make games run better.

This sounds fucking fantastic minus the battery life of course and if this turns out to be real this could be groundbreaking.

I would be surprised if the dock provided any kind of boost. That's increased costs and it's a potentially messy, muddled solution. It doesn't seem very "Nintendo".

Battery life--well, it's going to be the most powerful handheld ever. Playing Skyrim on the go is going to guzzle power.

I fully expect it to have a touchscreen, though. There is no way around that if they want to chip away at the mobile market.

You would think that, since the handheld is revealed, we would get less rumors but apparently, that is not the case.

Anyway, touchsceen makes sense.

I am sure it will run slightly better when it is docked similar to how Laptop's get an increase in fps when they are plugged into the wall outlet. The thing is, its not a significant increase in performance. I doubt the dock itself has anything like a GPU cause Nintendo's thing is pretty clear imo

I hope it doesn't have a terrible battery life otherwise the reviewers will bash it. If it wants to be both a "console" and a "portable," it shouldn't half ass either experience...

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Only in the sense of a higher resolution output it does provide anything with a semblance to power is what I believe - and it has been confirmed from the spec sheet of the devkit that while the tablet itself gives 720p output, docked, you get 1080p.

Mind you, I didn't watch the video. However, "some games playable" only when docked would torpedo Nintendo's whole idea for this thing, If the dock did give additional power, it could be in the form of nicer textures, or more effects.

This is what I expected on the battery life given their it's a console first statement, it likely wasn't their main priority over other aspects.

You're assuming it can play Skyrim on the go. Bethesda has indicated that this actually might not be the case, and wouldn't even confirm whether skyrim is in development for the Switch.

Yeah, but at least there's some hope now.

There's also the possibility that they'll go with the Tegra X2 chip instead of X1, putting it closer to XBO performance even through just the tablet.

Something tells me Nintendo is going to want this to cost as little as possible. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

The idea that it is more powerful when docked is the same as "overclocking" in this sense. When it is in handheld mode it has to run well enough to even reach that 3 hours of batter life so it's not going to be over clocked. While it is in the dock, possibly being cooled, it might allow the switch to overclock. It probably isn't true and isn't good for the CPU or GPU, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I don't think there's any processing power in the base because Nintendo basically told IGN as much, it may be that the Tegra chip inside the NS can run at full clock when docked because it doesn't have to worry about battery power in that case, but likely this is not a huge difference in performance.
