PS4 allows you to do custom button layout already.

Never used it myself, I was thinking of swapping the shoulder buttons round as games seem to prefer the spongy buttons for FPS, while I prefer the sturdy L! and R1 instead.

Ah, I have a PS4 and didn't know that.
Not sure if that alone would work with a 3rd party option of an elite control, but it would help.

I like when they say they don't want a "have and have not" type situation, while discussing a premium version of their existing console, which in itself creates a "have and have not" type situation.
I like the controller as it is and don't see the point in paying more money for something that does essentially the same job.
