No Elite DualShock 4 PS4 Pro controller, says Sony

Looking for a new PS4 Pro controller? Well, you can count out the Elite DualShock 4 as it’s not going to be available for the new console.

By Michael Harradence on 21 October 2016

Sony won’t release an Elite DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4 Pro, according to system architect, Mark Cerny.

Speaking during an interview with The Verge, Cerny said that the format holder wants to maintain a ‘unified’ audience, and that manufacturing a new controller variation would ultimately splinter that user base.

We want to keep PlayStation 4 as a single unified audience,” he said. “We need to be quite careful to the enhancements we add to the controller. But it’s not the sort of thing that’s going to create have’s and have nots.”

This is in direct contrast to Nintendo and Microsoft, who have been releasing variants of their controllers for a number of years now. For example, Microsoft has launched the Xbox One Elite pad, which is a high-end version of the standard controller.

I'm ok with the regular one, don't see the need for it either

can't fix what's not broken, the DualShock 4 pro controller is like an elite on its own.

CPU: Ryzen 7950X
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

I never asked for one so doesn't bother me.

Well those elite Xbox One controllers sold surprisingly well (over 1 million produced), critical reception is positive, and it apparently works well for some people with disabilities.

So obviously there is going to be demand for Sony to offer something similar.

If someone really has to have it, there's a third party controller.

Not a big deal, Scuf makes higher end controllers if you really want one on PS4.

Not for me because I'm OCD.  If the "elite" DS4 came with the PS4 Pro, I have to have that same controller when buying multiple controllers so they'd all match. Being that they would be new means that they will retail for $60, but you can find the current DS4 for around $45 on Amazon.  That's savings.  So since it appears that the PS4 Pro will come bundled with the original DS4, it will be easier to shop for an extra DS4.  Besides, it's been reported that the DS4 is the most comfortable current gen controller.  That's relative and opinionated.  But if this is generally true, there should not be such a high demand for an "elite" controller similar to the one Microsoft offers.

Well the X1 has an app that lets people make various changes to the configuration of the elite controller. Such as button mapping.

Even if a 3rd party had an option, its unlikely PS4 would have an app that allowed for similar configuration.

PS4 can natively change button configuration.
