Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch (Dock) Prediction Thread! (Who's getting crow?)

Does the Nintendo Switch Dock have a sexy CPU/GPU in it used for secret sauce?

Yes, I believe in the AMD... 3 12.00%

It's time to choose your side! Will the Switch Dock be "secret sauce" and boost the power of the console with it's own GPU or CPU hardware? Or is it just a glorified charging cradle with hdmi output?

I'm going with the latter simply from this footage alone.

Notice how the tablet is removed during gameplay, with absolutely no pause, you can't just detatch a cpu/gpu that is doing calculations like that, I.E in the footage shown the Dock is doing no processing.

Now I'm not saying the dock won't do ANYTHING. While in the dock the Tablet's hardware could be overclocked, and the dock may have fancy upscaling hardware in it, but I do not believe the dock itself has a cpu/gpu in it that will be used for calculations and rendering in gameplay.

So which side are you on?

As is tradition, losing side gets a crow avatar for... a month?

I say that the dock will not provide any significant boost to the performance. At best, the tablet will gain performance because it can draw more power from the wall socket which will provide a slight boost in performance but not enough to be care worthy.

So imo, I will say that the dock will not be used to enhance performance to a care worthy degree to call it a "hybrid". Maybe a couple of fps here and there. Because if it did increase the performance to a significant degree, than Nintendo would have 110% advertised it on the preview trailer but they said nothing about it.

Not necessarily. This teaser was more preocupied and laser focused to show the real selling point, which is the portability, than anything else.I think its just too soon to say.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I think that the dock will have a boost for it's power, but like with all bets, I won't be changing my avis or sigs ;)

Ummm... I am pretty sure its main selling point that they were trying to show is that it can both be used on a tv and be portable... Not just its portable... And if it was a feature, I don't get why they wouldnt say "when you but it on the docking station, it you will have higher graphics or if you take it off, you can take it anywhere."

They were switching between it being on the dock and used on a TV + being able to be played else where multiple times.

there was 2 chips from Nvidia so one has to be on the dock station, and nintendo patent that technology if you remember a box to increase power on other device, so it must be that.

34 years playing games.

The dock will highly improve its online capabilities, and it will serve as the charger. Maybe in some cases it improves the performances of the games, but that's about it.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Oh and if I do lose, I will change one of my sigs for a week

It doesn't seem to have any vents for active cooling so I doubt there can be anything more than a low power psu in there. USB connectors on the left, some unknown connector on the right, power and hdmi on the back. Not much depth left for anything significant in there.

Perhaps it has a low power cpu to download updates etc while you are a way, to quickly sync that with the handheld when you get home.

Welp, according to Nintendo themselves:

Nintendo continued: "The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."

I think that settles it... No additional GPU and etc inside it...
