anywhere? the trailer made that perfectly clear

To play games on balcony parties? While playing an actual sport? When going trekking? That's what the trailer showed me. The only good one was in the airport / plane but even then it can be replaced with a tablet or phone.

some of the examples they gave were a bit goofy but it showed that you can play at home, at a friends, at the park, at the airport/plane, you can play on the TV, you can play multiplayer with a single device anywhere.

Are you really insinuating that this device offers the same experiences as a typical phone/tablet?

I don't like the name. It seems too "small" of a name.

Like "Playstation" and "Xbox" feel like a brand, "Switch" just sounds too specific to this singular type of hardware and not an overarching brand, like I dunno if "Switch 2" or something really clicks.

But who'd want to play that anywhere? There are very specific situations where you'd play this. When you're playing on the go, you're just looking at wasting time. In those situations phones/tablets are are better because while the experience might not be as good, they can do more and are more portable.

I liked the BOTW footage but thats about it. Just looks like more gimmicky nonsense from Nintendo.

No.

Great argument.

So can somebody tell me what's the definition of gimmick? What's gimmicky about portability? What's gimmicky about having detachable controls which allow you to play outside easily, in a trip with your friends or something? Also, it's very Nintendo-like, trying to have a focus in social gaming. Kind of refreshing after all this VR hype lately.

Like:

- It'll probably end the game droughts that Nintendo's systems tend to suffer, and will certainly have good support from japanese developers.
- It uses cartridges
- Pro Controller is still and option

Dislike:

- A tablet that you can connect to a TV isn't a home console.
- The tablet with the joy-con controllers attached looks just too big and unconfortable for a handheld.
- Pro controller will be probably sold separately.
- From the games shown, there doesn't seem to be significant improvements over their Wii U counterparts.

So far I don't like it, I'll wait for more info about the price and more importantly, upcoming games, before deciding if I want one or not. The only thing clear for now is that I'll be playing Zelda: BotW on Wii U

gimmick is typically defined as a special feature for the sake of a special feature, something that really doesnt have a meaningful purpose and is just there to be different.

based on that, i wouldnt really consider Switch to be gimmicky since the concept of consolidating their two product lines into one serves an actual purpose.

Yep, basically this. But in gaming world, everything that deviates from the standard setup is considered gimmicky. Boooring. It's just a dock station which converts your portable into a home console. Which is the core concept of Switch xD.
