Off the top of my head I would recommend Alien: Isolation. Very good FPS and should be cheap as hell on PC. Also the two Metro games, they aren't like great or anything but the presentation and world they present are very nice.

I wouldn't consider Metroid Prime or Portal to be FPS games because the overall structure of the games are different from other FPSes.

Portal at its core is a puzzle platform game, your "weapon" is only used to solve puzzles and it cannot directly actually harm enemies. The main purpose of the game is to solve puzzles and escape the facility.

Metroid Prime is more like Zelda in Space with guns, if you ask me. The overall structure is to explore the planet, collect items and artifacts or keys or whatever, solve puzzles and defeat bosses. Except for a few circumstances you are not required to kill most enemies and most enemies do not much require much strategy to actually defeat. Combat is mostly secondary to exploration, puzzle solving and item collecting. Samus in the games after collecting some powerups is an absolute beast compared to for example Master Chief in Halo, I do not think that anything in Metroid Prime can instantly kill Samus (except for Phazon overload in Prime 3) this is because the health system in Prime is built towards exploration while in Halo is build towards combat.

tl;dr Portal and Metroid Prime do not feel like other shooters to me so I wouldn't consider them to be FPS games.

You should also add Serious Sam 3 to your list, it's my personal favorite of the three.

Stalker was pretty good. As was Thief 2.

I'd recommend both, if you're wanting to try out a couple more.

Maybe try out Mirror's Edge too. Did you ever play Day Z when it was popular? Might be worth an honorable mention as it was essentially a mod for ARMA 2. Hell, ARMA 2 and ARMA 3 might be worth a shot too.

Yeah, I feel the same way. What about Deus Ex or something like Peter Jackson's King Kong?

Call of Juarez Gunslinger most fun I've had with an FPS game in years. Would definitely recommend trying it.

Spec Ops: The Line would be mentioned by many because it kind of flips the genre's conventions on their head with its story. I wasn't blown away personally - it was good but nothing amazing - but a lot of people consider this to contain the best story of any of the CoD-esque modern shooters.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood seems highly appreciated by fans of New Order.

Infinite Warfare honestly looks surprisingly good to me. Probably the first CoD that has gotten my interest since MW2 burnt me out of the franchise. Battlefield 1 also getting a lot of praise. But these two are going to be hard to judge in a ranking list because they'll still be so fresh.

Black Mesa. Basically Half Life made pretty for the current-ish generation.

Not sure whether to really recommend it or not. Singularity. Basically a BioShock-inspired shooter that wasn't actually half bad. Came to be appreciated more long after its release.

Oh yeah, I want to check out the Juarez games! Was just looking at GameStop last night for them. Will add to the list!

I thought I had received Spec Ops through PS+ but I guess not. Will keep in eye out for it.

I recently got the STALKER games on GOG.

And I got the original ARMA on Steam. Will look for the sequels, too. Thanks!

Just beat Black Ops II. Spoiler alert: that will not make the final list.
