Forums - Microsoft Discussion - When will the Xbox 720 (or whatever) come put? Post your predictions here.

2008 is going to be (generally) unkind to the XBox 360 worldwide, by the end of their fiscal year they will decide to prepare their "Next Generation" console; Microsoft will require 6 to 12 months to finalize the plans for their hardware, and then they will want to give developers 12 to 18 months to prepare content for the system's launch. This means that Microsoft will launch their next system after September 2010 at the earliest and before January 2012.

2011. this mite be microsofts last console. i dont know who will buy their console with the painful images of the RROD in the back of their heads

MikeB, i thought i was gonna be the odd one out and say that, I dont think that they will bother at all, financially they have blown so much money on the whole project and are only now getting money back, if that is true im not sure, but with the recient price drop in EU i cant imagine their profits are massive on hardware atleast. they will probably run this generation as long as they can, pushing it more and more into the casual mass market, finally making money from it and than concentrate on PC games, or even PC hardware for games.

The main problem they have is that they cannot get any ground in Japan, and some may say that the market isnt that important, but it is, there was more PS2s sold in japan alone than xbox world wide. If they give up on Japan (which they have little option of doing, they may as well give up altogether.

2010 seems about right

I think this may be Microsoft's last console. They ruined quite a bit of their reputation with regard to their console hardware building competences. (ATi's GPU and IBM's CPU are fine, but how it's all integrated into one device sucks pretty much IMO)

If the upcoming PS3 software library crushes the 360 software library as expected and the PS3 shoots way ahead of the 360 in install base sales I think many consumers will not be eager to jump onto the next XBox, all will depend upon the years ahead of us, but if the 360 flatlines I think Microsoft may decide to go back to focussing on their core business, the Windows desktop OS monopoly. Vista really needs to mature and could use some exclusive games to push it down through consumer throats.

That will never happen, even if the 360 flatlines, MS won't just go back to focussing on software. How would MS grow if they just concentrated on software? (answer: they wouldn't), they've plateaued and are slowly losing market share to competitors.

Now I'm not saying the MS empire is crumbling, from far it, but if MS investors want to see profit increases year over year then MS has to keep expanding into other fields. Console is still a great fit for MS, they just need to get their crap together. They have a pretty bad "reliability" stain on their shoulders which will need plenty of cleaning before people trust a new xbox console.

Back on Topic - When will MS release a new console? Probably one year before the PS4....

LOL :)  Anyways I think they'll release the next one in 2011.

2011 is my bet. The 360 just started profiting and with both game royalties and live subscriptions it's gonna be a nice earner for MS.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

Somewhere around the turn of the decade, 2011 or 2012. If I must choose between the two I say 2012.
