Star Wars Lightsaber School Sued by Lucasfilm for Trademark Infringement

The Star Wars Lightsaber Academy teaches people how to use lightsabers.

Disney subsidiary Lucasfilm is suing lightsaber training school owner Michael Brown for cybersquatting, trademark infringement, and unfair competition. AsThe Hollywood Reporter reports, Lucasfilm claims Brown is infringing on multiple trademarks including the Jedi Order logo. You can see a comparison in the image below.

"Defendants regularly use the Lucasfilm Trademarks without authorization in connection with their businesses," the complaint states. "Among other infringing activities, Defendants use a logo that is nearly identical, and confusingly similar, to Lucasfilm’s trademark Jedi Order logo... round in shape, with six wing-like shapes curving upward (three per side), and an eight-pointed star featuring elongated top and bottom points stretched into a vertical line.

"Defendants have established a pattern of infringement by registering numerous domains that infringe upon the Lucasfilm Trademarks," the complaint continues. "Defendants use the infringing domains to further their infringing activities alleged herein."

The Star Wars company says it's served multiple cease-and-desist notices to Brown, though he's responded with a trademark application for "Lightsaber Academy, Inc." In addition to damages and profits, Lucasfilm wants control of the infringing domains, the destruction of any infringing merchandise, and the withdrawal of any infringing trademark applications. Alternatively to actual damages and profits, Lucasfilm wants up to $2 million in statutory damages for each infringed trademark.

THR attempted to contact Brown, but he could not be reached for comment. You can read the full complaint from Lucasfilm here.

And George Lucas would have given them a thumbs up and worked with them I'm sure. God Disney's greed has gotten the best of them lately. Sick scumbags. Kathleen Kennedy just won't stop!

$2 million in damages for that? Exactly how was it "damaging" to the brand. It probably connected with kids and allowed them to live their Star Wars dreams. Now all these kids are going to grow bitter toward it. Exactly how is anyone EVERY presenting unfair competition to Disney? They should have worked together on this one because this makes Disney look like slimy Hutt's imo.

Speaking of Hutt's. You wouldn't believe the shit with Slave Leia going on at Disney. Gross!

Are you actually criticising Disney for this? Seriously?

Some random guy is trying to make a quick buck on the back of their product. And even though Disney had the decency to send him multiple cease and desist letters this jerk has the audacity to try and trademark stuff that`s part of Disney`s IP for himself. He deserves to get sued. If he didn`t want to be sued he had 2 opportunities to avoid it, he could have not tried to profit from someone elses work in the first place or he could have actually taken notice of the cease and desist letters he was sent.

Indeed I am. I didn't realize he tried to trademark this stuff, however the fact he had a dojo to teach people stage performance with lightsabers (like fencing) and have it all Star Wars themed. That is really cool! If he was properly teaching the different forms of lightsaber combat and the Jedi discipline that would be really cool.... oh wait the Disney canon is lacking half of that. Kidding. Though yeah trying to trademark that is pathetic. He had a good idea but he went about it the wrong way.
