Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer Says Xbox One Isn't As Big In Japan Due to Preferring Games Like Persona 5 or Nioh

I don't really see the Xbox One's fortune's changing in Japan at this point. It has sold so few consoles there that most Japanese developers would likely not even consider putting big exclusive titles on the system at this point. Had they made an effort earlier in the generation to get some big Japanese games on the system, then maybe, but now with barely 70,000 units sold it's just too late.

Last gen they pretended to care about Japan in the early days and just decided to chase the big money markets.

Even if they do get the 3Rd party support: 1. It didn't help them THAT much last gen,
2. Since it wasn't consistent Japanese gamers aren't gonna jump for it again. And since they barely buy consoles in general, the impact won't be anything amazing.

IMO

The 360 did better in Japan because it had notable Japanese games. With that said, getting games Japan cares about is a waste of money for MS.

Big budget western focused games moves more hardware worldwide. If anything, MS should encourage ports but not fund big Japanese games.

This so much. Japan isn't that huge into console gaming anyways.

Not only has console gaming seen a decline, but dedicated mobile gaming device have also plunged.

Let Nintendo and Sony battle for that market. Its a small region with niche taste not worth fighting for.

Shame really. The 360 was the place to be in the early days of last gen with the fantastic Lost Odyssey. Still the best JRPG I've played since it released

Yeah and this gen that scene is almost entirely lost to Sony. They really did weather that storm last gen.

Sony and Nintendo.

When talking about Japan you have to consider handheld because its mainstream there. Nintendo is the most popular there.

MS needs to make a porting studio that works exclusively with Japanese devs. Then they could get all the japanese 3rd party games that PS4 gets. At the very least those games would have modest sales in the west, and encourage more development for when Scorpio comes out.

I don't think making a studio is necessary. They simply need to encourage these studios to put games on their console even if MS has to fund part of it.

Western studio tend to put their games on as many viable platform as possible. But Japanese studios tend to make exclusives pretty often.

Theres no reaosn NioH or Persona 5 couldnt be on xbox one, its Sega and Tecmo-Koei publishing them, but lets be honest, even when Microsoft was trying, Japan wasn't buying...

If Blue Dragon and Lost Oddesey and Tales at the time for X360 didn't do it, multiplatform games wouldn't do it.

Totally agree. They tried really hard on the first three years of Xbox 360 life and they failed to sell the console at acceptable rate. They were releasing two or three exclusive JRPG per year. I mean look at this list:

Lost Odyssey

Blue Dragon

Tales of Vesperia

Eternal Sonata

Magna Carta

Infiniti Undiscovery

the Last Remenant

Star Ocean 4

Ace Compatible 6

+ Other smaller exclusivesize

In addition to getting a lot of multiplatform like FF13 and Resident Evil

Xbox 360 was the place to go when you're looking for Japanese content and that says a lot.

No one can really are more from them, and yet they didn't even reach 2 million.

And people in the west didn't help. Those games barely broke 500k.

You'Lloyd have a very hard time convincing the investor to pump more money repeating the experiment.

Exactly.

I cannot imagine toilet-free life.

Kebabs have a unique attribute compared to other consumables. To unlock this effect you need to wolf down a big ass kebab really fast, like under 10 minutes or so and wait for the effect to kick in. If done correctly your movements should feel unbelievably heavy to the point where you literally cannot move at all.
