Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer Says Xbox One Isn't As Big In Japan Due to Preferring Games Like Persona 5 or Nioh

Then get more Japanese games on your system. Things like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are good to have but it needs more than just those.

He should be pushing to get more of those games on Xbox One then. Its not like it would be super hard to make a port for it.

Phil: "I think it’s due to a lot of games that are released on the console, I feel that a lot of the games are not games that the Japanese public would play and get themselves into. A lot of Japanese gamers really seem to like games such as Persona 5 or Nioh and that is why we decided to get in touch with Japanese developers to create such games as Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey for the Xbox 360. If we plan on doing better in the Japanese game market we want to release games that the average Japanese gamer will really enjoy."

He knows!

Also what do you mean *if* Phil ?
Ofc you want to do better in japan.
Time to do Lost Odyssey II.

But yeah missing Persona is a big one.

Just drop Japan and focus on new IPs that will sell millions.

LOL, sold sod all even with JP games, it has a Microsoft label on it, doesn't matter what you release on it.

In the West as well tbh, Western hardcore Sony fans are into Japanese games too. Games like Nioh and Persona 5 are gonna sell well here as well.

In order to improve sales in Japan, Microsoft would have to put an end to Japanese games ending up as "exclusive by default" on Playstation systems. Sony gets so many great games as console exclusives simply because the developers see no reason to put them on Xbox. They're right, of course, but that very fact will preclude Xbox from ever being a serious factor. Buying a few exclusives here and there just won't cut it.

Of course, it has to be mentioned that Sony knows this and is actively buying their own Japanese exclusives, thus making it harder to break the cycle. Even Nintendo got into the act last generation. It also seems many Japanese publishers actively like releasing on one console at a time, though I'm not sure why.

Shame really. The 360 was the place to be in the early days of last gen with the fantastic Lost Odyssey. Still the best JRPG I've played since it released

Sunset verdrive, struggled to sell 1m

Wuantum Break, 200k first month

Recore 50k

FH3 "best racing game in the history" as some claim, yet it only did 600k first weeks

There is no way any Japanese studio is going to send a game exclusively onto a machine selling double digits each week in Japan. It would just make zero sense, the xbox brand is dead there, Ms should just focus on the two markets which enjoy it rather than waste energy on a market which just doesn't want the system. I mean spend that time and money on advertising forza in Europe and shooters in the US and they'll bank more sales
