Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox install problems

So a problem I have with my Xbox One is that in the console madates that I install the game to the harddrive before I can olay it. This wouldn.t bother me expect the system Microsoft has setup for doing this is infuriating.

I knew the feature was introduced in the later years of the 360 but was not mandatory, and this worked fine for me. Now however, the game has to install before it can be played. This prevents me from doing the main thing I want to do with a game when I get it: play it! Additionally some of my most anticipated games are larger than most and take an eternity to install. I got home at 5pm on Halo 5 release day desperate to play it. It was after midnight when it was fully installed and allowed me to acces the game. Im now having the same issue with Gears 4.

Has anyone else has this problem or has anyone found a way around it that I haven't discovered yet?

The only issue I'm aware of is that if you "install" and "download"(usually a patch) at the same time - everything gets messed up.

I've been told to turn off your network connection. Fully instead. THEN patch.

Does the xb1 have that feature where you can install a small amount then play like the ps4 - or is that ps4 only?

Yeah i have the same problem of downloading a game and a patch at the same time.

Yeah some games you can play while it's installing.

I do't have this problem I install from disc and download update at the same time but then I have fibre optic and while it's taking its time I hop onto my 3DS from some quick gaming.

The game needs a full install and then after that you just need to pop the disc in to acknowledge to the console that you still own the game,  Sometimes it prompts you that at around 60% install the game is ready to play but I just wait till it's 100% to minimize any glitching.

Seems to me your internet connection sucks. I was playing gears in under 30 min when i installed it. Sounds like the update is whats slowing down the install.

heh, I remember that issue with the Xbox One. It`s crazy that PS4 can install games in seconds whereas for Xbox One it seems to take forever. The best solution I can think of (and you won`t like it) is just to leave the game installing over night and play in the morning instead.

The Xbox One seems to install *everything* though. That's usually a good 30-50Gb of data, some games need to decompress data whilst installing, which takes additional time and extra drive space that could apparoach 80Gb or more. Then patch that afterwards.
The Xbox is basically doing a more comprehensive install... And when dealing with 10's of Gigabytes, it was never going to be a speedy process anyway.
Hopefully Scorpio includes a faster optical drive to speed up the process.

For example... I bought Dragon Age: Inquisition Digital Deluxe edition on Disc, which I obviously installed.
A bit later we got a GOTY edition, which basically included all the DLC.
I bought the digital version of the GOTY edition instead of purchasing all the DLC seperately (Cheaper) which basically just upgraded my install from the Deluxe to Game of the Year and downloaded the DLC seperately, there was no extra install/download for the base game.

Basically once you install the game to the Hard Disk, the disk is only used for DRM checking.

Yes. But it's up to the Developer.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection had this, the game took me 20 hours to install and patch, but I could play chunks of the campaign whilst the rest of the game installed.

This frustrates me as much as the next person, you buy a game, you will then wish to run home and play it as soon as you can, sadly that isn't always the case.

Its not crazy, its different, most games PS4 games will have "play while install" so you can play the game while it installs, some games like FIFA17 and NBA14 I noticed that these didn't support it, and would only allow you to play an excebition match and the install times on those where very simulair.

both have a blu ray read speed of 6x and both have the same speed regular harddrive.

The Xbox doesn't support this, only one option, install the complete game and then you can play. Most people prefer the PS4 way but in the end its a small issue I guess.

The Xbox One does have play as you install. I remember using it for a couple games, it only let me play a very limited amount though, and even then takes ages before it even allows that. The PS4 lets you play the whole thing.

With the PS4 its very easy to notice how long some games take to install, just insert a new game, wait for the disc to stop spinning :D I've done that a few times and sometimes it doesn't stop easely haha

I'm not sure how the xbox handles games in comparison to the ps 4 for installing, but how is it when it comes to downloading digital games? I remember being blown away by how the ps4 installed injustice, firstly downloading the game engine then allowing me to play with the characters as they Downloaded, considering the game was 30gb it took a while to download and I found it cool that checking back at various times gave more and more characters. Story mode was not available until the download was near completion though

Yeah, it's slow as Christmas coming when I was a kid.

I had the same problem with halo 5. I joke that MS stole the most hated feature of the PS3, insanely slow installs.

I haven't done a same game comparison but it's much slower installing games than a ps4 in general.
