Forums - PC Discussion - AMD New Polaris GPU Revisions w/50% Better Perf/Watt (NX delay reason?)

AMD has reportedly started rolling out new revisions of its Polaris 10 & Polaris 11 GPUs with a 50%+ improvement in performance per watt. Polaris 10 and Polaris 11 are AMD’s latest GPUs powering the company’s midrange RX 480 & RX 470 as well as mainstream RX 460 graphics cards. The new GPU revisions will reportedly debut first in the embedded market and will deliver the same and/or slightly better performance compared to the previous revisions but at significantly lower power consumption.

AMD’s New Polaris GPU Revisions En Route With A 50%+ Improvement In Perf/Watt

This significant improvement in power efficiency has been attributed to an improvement to the 14nm metal mask layers of both Polaris GPUs by AMD in combination with a more refined binning process. The new revision of Polaris 10 (5.8 tflops) that’s will go into the embedded market will bring down the typical board power from 150W as is found in the RX 480 to less than 95W. The updated revision of Polaris 11 will not only bring down the power from 75W to less than 50W but it will also improve clock speeds and bring up the compute throughput to 2.5 TFLOPS from 2.15.

The new revisions will be available immediately to the embedded market under the E9550 and E9260 product names for Polaris 10 and 11 respectively. The updated revisions are believed to be coming to the mobile market in the form of mobility Radeon RX 400 series graphics cards in the coming months. It’s not clear yet whether AMD will also introduce the new revision to the desktop market. However, in the mobile market where power efficiency rules supreme this could prove to be a pivotal change for the company’s competitiveness in notebooks.

Just speculation but if Nintendo were to use this, they can essentially create gcn 2.0 engineering w/cartridges.  PS4pro will be an ugly hulking beast while NX , if using these new polaris revisions, can come in sleeker than OG PS4 with more power.

That makes sense. Nintendo likes to keep wattage low on handhelds for battery life reasons.
They're pretty keen on minimizing power draw for their home consoles too.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

WTF? 50% improvement alone from better manufactureing?

Thats nuts. Makes you wonder if the factory that manufactured those chips at start wherent properly calibrated or something.

If Zen hits the store, AMD may have something competitive again.

I still have an Athlon 64 X2 running as a legacy device for office use every day... ye olde lives on.

Yeah, I think this is what Nintendo was waiting for when they delayed NX. This improvement affects embedded chips which is exactly what Nintendo would be using for NX. There was a rumor recently of NX using a 3.6 tflop AMD GPU and that matches perfectly with an underclocked RX 470.

If the rx480 is under 95w, guessing a cutdown of the new 470 would be under 75.  Take the disc drive out and Nintendo has a sleek and powerful console ala gamecube but will feature masculine colors this time.

Worst case if Nintendo went with the rx460, that would be the equivalent of Wii U to the previous gen consoles.  But rx470 and rx480 are legit solutions now for Nintendo to future proof and compete without breaking the bank vs4pro & Scorpio, & 480 performance would sit right in the middle..  No excuses now, this would be a terrible time to go all in on mobile tech for some convoluted hybrid solution.

naw lurker, just painting the picture of the small console that fits Nintendo ideals.  FYI I have an ugly ass fat Xbox one,...

For a hybrid if it reaches 2.5tf on console mode and like 1.25tf on mobile mode, then I would be happy as hell. I mean thats close to x1 performance for a handheald and even better than a wii u. No more than $300 guesses are around $250 then it wwwill still kick ass.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

I hope Nintendo will chose Nvidia for their tablet. AMD would be a terrible choice. And it's too late for using that tech for NX anyways.

The hybrid rumors said that it wasn't even 1TF at full power. It would be closer to half that.
