Gnostic = Knowing

Atheist = Disbeliever

and what does he do? He spends a lot of time going to debates and talks around the world. Call it what you want, to to me that is preaching.

Even setting aside the content of what Sam Harris says (the fact that you call them a debate already sets it apart from preaching) this is a basic failure of logic.

Muhammed Wilkerson is a Muslim.  Muhammed Wilkerson plays defensive end for the New York Jets.  Does that mean I can say "Muslims play defensive end for the New York Jets"?

debates is not all what he does.. like that is the only thing he do. ::rolls eyes::

Which has nothing to do with the fact that Sam Harris is not representative of atheism as a whole.

Perhaps you should read the book instead of the title. He doesn't actually claim the universe happened out of nothing, but rather, came out of an unknown that, when over-simplified, would effectively be "nothing".

He has been rightfully mocked for that his invention of a "nothing" that is "something".

You're the one claiming that Sam Harris "preaches". You might have said that you believe that atheism is a religion, but you certainly implied that you believe that is the case. Furthermore, you're still wrong about what you're using as definitions for "athiest" and "agnostic". You're incorrectly labelling an "athiest" as "someone who believes there is no god" and "agnostic" as "someone who is skeptical about whether or not a god exists".

There's no other way to say it. This is wrong. Your insult to being told that doesn't change the truth of that.

Again, (a)thiesm is the belief (or lack of belief) in a deity. (A)gnosticism is the belief (or lack of beleif) that you can know that a deity exists. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Sam Harris is an example of a very vocal gnostic athiest. The fact that you're using him as an example of what it means to be an atheist is the same as me using Fred Phelps as an example of what it means to be a christian, when we both know most athiests and christians aren't like either.

Preaching = publicly proclaim or teach (a religious message or belief). This is what Sam Harris does, and other Athiest that follows him.

Didn't I tell you not to reply? I feel like you're posting just to waste time, and read what I've bold. It is the same thing.

I'm sorry, do you think you can dictate who can and cannot reply to you? Because you can't.

It's odd that you got insulted that I mentioned that you seem to believe that athiesm is a religion, and then give a definition of preaching that means proclaiming a religious message. It appears that I was correct.

Still, the fact remains that he wasn't claiming the universe came from nothing.

There is a problem here with semantics, and when I feel like something is a lost cause and they try to prolong their misinterpretation as truth, then yeah that pisses me off. I really try to be nice here, but when you deny my statement by straight-up calling it ignorant, and then come up with a defination that basically means the same thing about what I said.. smh

You think I said atheist is a religion because I categorize them as people that preach to others that god/gods/goddesses don't exist.  Would it be better if I said they advocate? Because Advocate, and Preach is the same thing. Preach has no single meaning. It appears you're very wrong.

True, he does not represent everyone, you've made a very good point.

Life has been on this planet something like 4 billion years of which only a few thousand years have had religion and its already getting to the point where new religions are almost impossible to start. In modern thinking societies it has become far less significant. Religion is a disease of the mind and we are gradually learning more how to vaccinate and protect against it.

Still admittedly it has influence and is the cause of much hatred, intolerance and persecution in the world.

Please what? The information age is perfect feeding ground for new religions. Falun Gong, Wicca, Obama is no american, Babism, Bahá'í Faith, 9-11 was an inside job, scientology, moon landing is fake, ...

Every crackpot theory is a strong faith, and this in itself is the seed of anew religion. Probably the religions of old started somehow in that way. Think along the lines: killing Jesus was an inside job, the jews ratted him out to the romans, or somethign like that. Multiple crackpot theories put together and mixed with all-time truths may form a religious worldview. The crackpot theorists flock together, these days in chatrooms and webforums. they may start rites, something like the annual letter to officials demanding the opening of the area 51 files. Think 5000 years in the future, such a letter (symbolic by then) might be an actual way to practice a religion.

I myself identify as a true believer of the invisible pink unicorn:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_Pink_Unicorn

I now order a pizza as offering for my goddess.

I should have been clearer, I meant mass acceptance of religion. Yes people start new religiions but they are quickly ridiculed and do not have the  potential to replace older established religions even though often they work better sometimes with science etc because of  being formulated in the modern age.

You can't ridicule islam without fear of death in many countries but new religions are often heavily criticised and ridiculed before that viewpoint can be hardened over time with generational brain washing.

Holy hell. Can these threads go away? Why do we have shit like this on this site?

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.
