Forums - Gaming Discussion - PSVR: Sony Ramping Up Production To Meet Demand

"We know from the data we have from pre-orders that the interest we have is significant," Ryan said in a TV interview, adding that at launch, sales will be in the "many hundreds of thousands".

PlayStation VR could sell around 2.6 million units this year, according to SuperData research. Sony is a strong position given that it already has an install base of over 40 million PlayStation 4 consoles, so even a small take-up of the VR headset could bring in additional revenues for the gaming unit.

But with demand strong, Sony will need to keep up with strong production and supply, something that has been taken into account.

"We know that the replenishment cycle is a good one, production is going exactly as we anticipated. We have made decisions to further increase capacity at the back end of 2016 and into 2017, so there are going to be a lot of PlayStation VRs around the world, whether that's enough to satisfy the demands of the market, we'll see," Ryan told CNBC.

Yeah as expected they've been producing hundreds of thousands for this year. You can tell by the way it's selling out in a lot of places. Good to hear they're ramping up production for next year.

That means Day1 they could have outsold both Occulus Rift + HTC Vive.

We all knew Sony was probably going to be the leader when it came to VR at start, however dont think most of us expected them to do so day1.

Good news in my ears!

Don't expect console level sales though.

Will outsell Oculus and HTC Vive combined this year.

And let's not get carried away too much. Wii U and Vita both had good launches followed by a massive dip. This is new territory and although it'll go a long way in helping VR adoption, don't expect crazy numbers in 2017

If it sells like like PSvita or Wii U, that'd be great for a peripheral thats $300 ;)

I'm pretty sure it outsold Facebook Rift and Vive at midnight last night. Those two combined are only 90,000 users on Steam. The best estimates say around 90k Vive and 60k Rifts. Since not everyone is on steam.

PSVR probably is at 800,000 right now.

I belive they have more preorders aleady than there are rifts and vives out there already.
