Even on more powerful hardware like PS4, 60fps would have caused compromises. To me it was the wrong decision and you are right by mentioning some of the short-commings of MS' bestest IP they have.

1080p60 is heavy even for PS4, that's why we barely see this in Sony 1st party games, if at all. They know it's a too massive hit on the hardware and decided to go for bells and whistles where they were always strong with.

Well. I did state that these consoles would struggle to obtain 1080P and 60fps before this generation even started, so you aren't telling me anything new. :P

I do prefer a lower resolution over a lower framerate though, if it means an increase in fidelity.

Well, it depends on what you want to achieve at 1080p60 - in the end, everything is a trade-off. I think it's suprising that the most powerful console avoids it for first party games while the bone has games that favor it, resulting in worse graphics and people even make jokes about it.

Many people seem to be fine with 30fps.

For a console judged by its P's, RotTR, FM6, QB, FH3 and Gears 4 have all been graphical showcases in the last year.

The old argument just doesn't hold up as has been silly in retrospect.. It has been a fine console, and games are about go to another level on the platform next year with Scorpio.

PC I i7 3770K @4.5Ghz I 16GB 2400Mhz I GTX 980Ti FTW

Consoles I PS4 Pro I Xbox One S 2TB I Wii U I Xbox 360 S

Probably, but the character models bar Marcus suck ass. The new locust looks like they are made of clay and some of the humans (Jin) look awful too.

Dammit, I was about to make this thread when I got home from work today! :p

On topic, I personally think Battlefront still takes the cake.

It's crazy that Ryse is still in the running for the best looking game on the system when it's 3 years old now, a launch title, and built back when Xbox One lost a significant chunk of its processing power to Kinect.

people really have some nostalgia goggles when it comes to that game. i dont understand why people still think it looks so great when there are a lot of games that look considerably better. Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Infamous, Driveclub, Forza Horizon, Doom, MGS5, The Division and The Order for example.

Uncharted, Driveclub, Infamous, and The Odor are on Xbox One now? :P

Personally I think Battlefield Hardline and Battlefield 4 at 60fps beats out Halo 5 in the graphics stakes with 60fps.

Not to mention Star Wars Battlefront and soon Battlefield 1.

Goes without saying. :)

Yes. I cant believe anyone thinks Ryse is as good, let alone better. Fishy.

That's not what anyone is saying.

Indeed. For single player games I am happy with 30fps. But I need minimum of 60fps for multiplayer, the responsiveness is a massive boon, I'm a PC gamer.

Depends on the game for me. I can tolerate 30fps in something like Zelda or Xenoblade, but I wouldn't want to play Splatoon or F-Zero at 30fps.

Ya it definitely is

I actually wasn't expecting it to look this good, as most of the trailers gave a more polished Gears 3 vibe, but actually playing it now, the game looks absolutely stunning. Some of the environmental details, and lighting are just crazy.

One is...

The main reason I feel it's close is that while Gears runs at a higher framerate and resolution, I find Ryse's character models and lighting more impressive.

A lot of Gears 4 seems to take place at night, and I really, really don't like the way they've done the moonlight, it looks really bland, washed out and unappealing to me.

In the game's unveiling at E3 2015, the night-time lighting was way more atmospheric and rich, I wish they'd kept it that way for the final game.

The Xbox was lacking in terms of graphical showcase right from the beginning, except Ryse.
Last gen, games heavily relied on existing engines and this worked exceptionally good on the 360 and not that much on PS3, resulting in the multiplatform domination.
This gen, games are using their own engines more and engines like frostbite favor the more powerful hardware, as it should be.
MS is at fault here not putting emphasis on graphical showcases the hardware is of course able to do - something that Sony always had in mind, since PSX. If you want people to buy a console, you have to convince them with a wow-effect.
From a pure gaming point of view, the decision of making Halo 5 60fps was definitely right but it got a lot of criticism because of the way it looks and I would've liked a split between sp and mp framerates like with Gears now.
Forza being 60fps is also something that is truly amazing on this console and what they achieved but again, it's nothing that wows people like a 30fps Driveclub. Now with FH3 this has changed and I am glad that Gears and FH3 now show what the hardware is able to do, despite the worse hardware. I think before the image was made even worse in comparison because MS made the "wrong" decision when prioritizing development on exclusive games.

I would say the quality of a game is more important than framerate and Halo 5 is lacking in that department. Gears 4 is one of the best games in the genre despite lower framerates. Driveclub feels close to 60fps due to the way motion blur was added and I prefer those incredible weather effects over 60fps.

Btw Sony has nothing to do with what there developers make. Gran Turismo Sport is 60fps, KZ SF MP is 60fps and also Uncharted 4 MP is 60fps. Anyways I do agree MS made wrong decision with many games this generation like Halo 5 having a very short campaign and no split screen and Forza Motorsport 5 having less cars than 4 and just 14 tracks at launch. Also no exclusive game performed as terribly as Dead Rising 3 did running at 20fps.

Unreal Engine 4 is starting to stretch it's legs.
The game is a good overall presentation, possibly a game that finally pushes out Ryse for the Xbox's best looking game.

Still falls short of what the PS4 and PC can do though, but it's an impressive showing still.

Lol what PS4 can do XB1 can too. They are almost the same, PS4 is a bit more powerful allowing for example a boost in reoloution from 900p to 1080p in some games.

But even that resolution boost is pure bs for 1080p marketing. For example TW3 runs at 1080p on PS4 and 900p on the X1, but the X1 version has a quite more stable framerate meaning PS4 can achieve more resoultion than the X1 but even having a superior hardware that resolution boost comes with a sacrifice.
