Forums - Gaming Discussion - Stats suggest a UHD player is pretty irrelevant.

Is this a PS4P defense thread? Because it feels like one. I'm going to be working on a 4K Bluray collection because I got a player that can do it. Same way I build up a DVD collection because of PS2.

But I think the point of this thread is that the majority of people aren't getting their media on discs anymore, like I said before on here, the convience factor of just how much content you can access now on systems without ever going and finding a disc of a movie to play is just so overwhelming I do think (and the numbers reflect) that the great majority use streaming digital media rather than going for the movie collection on discs, heck just in terms of from an environmental point of view, they are for the most part a waste of plastics in comparison to some space on a HDD or streamed from the net.

But there are ppl, however small the base is, like me, who does have a 4K tv and 4K blu Rays, would like to have the ps4p be able to play them. Now it just means I have to switch over to my x1s if I want to watch a movie.

As for the thought that games for the X1 would come out on UHD discs, keep in mind that this would render them incompatible with the original X1 models, which wouldn't really be a great idea nor would it be in line with the vision of a generationless console that is the Xbox 1.

Lets presume MS keeps making new X1 models, so maybe in 2020 or 2021 we'll have an even more powerful X1.

At some point its going to make sense to stop supporting the OG X1 for major AAA titles due to CPU and GPU limitations. While less resource intensive games can keep coming to OG X1 for a long time, kinda like how many new indie games work fine on decade old hardware.

Hence, OG X1 and Scorpio will share all games for maybe 4 years. But when the newer X1 launches, tech pushing games maybe be limited to the Scorpio and the newer model. Atleast that way new content keeps coming to the OG X1 specs.

I'll be honest, I have no idea how a game which is optimized for the specs of the Scorpio will even run at all on the original X1 hardware, I think the end result of that would just look like a chugging mess, it would basically be the equivilent of trying to run a PC game with less than the minimum spec for it to install. Like it's a 4x power difference, that is close to the gap between the original X360 and the X1.

The extra power of these mid-gen upgrades are basically just for resolution, atleast for now. Think of it like a PC. The extra power is basically just being used to increase graphics settings.

For more simplistic stuff like indie games, the OG X1 should be able to run much of that for years. I mean many indie games on X1 are within the capabilities of the 360.

Defense is the best offense as they say.  This thread would appear to confirm at least a few dissappointed Playstation fans about PS4PRO lack of 4K UHD feature just here on Vg Chartz alone.

Xbox 360 and Xbox One

It's a shame, I already linked this article before
http://www.cityam.com/240500/netflix-and-kill-digital-movie-sales-overtake-dvds-for-the-first-time

An astonishing £1.31bn will be spent on the former (streaming) this year, rocketing 23 per cent on 2015, and with a 16 per cent decline in DVD and Blu-ray sales to just £956m.
Streaming now accounts for one in every three pounds spent on "home video", a market worth £2.27bn in total, according to the new figures from Strategy Analytics.

US is to follow shortly
http://www.thewrap.com/digital-streaming-should-overtake-discs-as-hollywood-profit-driver-in-2016/

Subscription streaming revenue among studios hit $5 billion last year, the second in a row to see a 25 percent gain over the previous year, according to the Digital Entertainment Group report. At the same time, the sale of discs dropped from $6.9 billion in 2014 to $6.1 billion in 2015, a decline of 10.9 percent. Revenue from disc rentals fell 7.5 percent from last year to $3 billion.

4K UHD still has a chance, ironically because of struggling internet speeds.
http://fortune.com/2016/01/08/blu-ray-struggles-in-the-streaming-age/

While consumers may want to stream all of their content, broadband speeds are still insufficient in many parts of the country or not reliable enough to provide a consistent, quality experience. “Since real-world broadband speeds fluctuate, homes need a connection of 25 to 50 Mbps in order to stream video at 4K quality. Only a small percentage of homes receive this speed today.”

However Kraus says 4K Blu-ray players like Samsung’s will have “a novelty effect on unit sales,” or a small uptick. That, however, “will not be enough to see an annual sales increase in the U.S. or Western Europe but [it] will offset part of the decline in sales.”

In June there was some positive news of early 4K UHD disc sales outpacing early blu-ray sales. Yet that was compared to blu-ray prior to the ps3 release with only $1000 players available while also competing against HD-DVD... Since then, not a peep :/ I hope Scorpio will keep the 4K UHD drive. Next year is when I plan on looking for a 4K tv or hopefully a projector.

No it doesn't, it means you "have to" switch over to your X1S if you "have to" watch one of the movies you have on 4k Blu Ray disc, otherwise you can watch whatever movie you want from streaming services like Netflix on your PS4.

Except Netflix charges extra for 4K streaming. I've had it before and watching your connection drop when the picture gets blurry because it can't keep up with 4K becomes annoying. Add in the fact Netflix streaming doesn't get all that many new release movies like xmen, deadpool, Star Trek, hitman, the Martian and more, HD or UHD versions, respectfully, your Netflix idea is a joke.

Ill stick to my new 4K blu Rays. Not the old movies Netflix usually adds.

It doesn't matter how many discs are sold.

Adding a 4k Blu-Ray drive adds very little to none to the systems cost but is a very good check-list feature for some.
Plus it's not the only Disc format the PS4 is unable to run, CD support is also non-existent.

Besides, one day you might end up with a sizable 4k blu-ray collection picked up from a garage sale or swap meet. Would be nice if all your hardware could run it, correct?

So, basically, the PS4 Pro should have had it so that a checkbox can be ticked? Or if in 5 years' time you come across some garage sale?
