Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should one-console gaming sites count toward Metacritic and the like?

I've always wondered this. I personally felt if a site isn't platform-agnostic, they're coming in with a slanted view toward a console and its games. I mean, they only exist to serve as fans of the one system, and give only news and views for it accordingly. I've never warmed to the one platfrom only sites, personally. I think their view can be too myopic. I like an opnion from a site that is exposed to many games over different platforms. Which leads to this, do you think reviews and scores from sites like these should go toward review aggregator sites like Metacritic and such?

Maybe the opinions of the solo console reviewers from these sites are still valuable, but in the back of your mind you'll question if the site is capable of truly objective reviews when it comes to that platform's products, no matter what the score. While these sites reviewing games are perfectly fine, I think it's an opinion that should be more weighed within the confines of that site and the community they represent. I don't want to out sites in particular, but I've visited a couple that are definite Kool-Aid drinkers for they companies they like, and I wonder to myself, who are these reviews helpful for on a wider scale?

Regardless, everyone will buy what they want anyway, and that's fine. But, for those who want to be more informed about their purchases, it helps to get perspective from someone who's familiar with a genre of game, or coming in clean, not just solely a fan of the console it appears on.

Anyway, how about you?

In an ideal world, no. However metacritic is broken nowadays anyway so who cares? Even sites that do all consoles have bias and most sites would rather shit om a game because negativity generates hype.

Do not go to metacritic for game reviews, you could end up buying a heaping pile of trash or passing on something you might really like. I would find a few YouTube reviewers who shares the same tastes that you do and go off of what they have to say if I were you. It is fsr more reliable these days.

I just buy what I want personally regardless of what reviewers say though. No one knows me like myself afterall.

Don't read reviews from sources you don't trust. If you have a built in distrust towards platform specific sites, then don't read them. What I would say about Metacritic is to ignore the score completely and use it (or OpenCritic/GameRankings) to easily have access to whatever reviews you do trust. A lot of people trust the reviews on platform specific sites like NintendoLife, XboxAchievements, or PlayStation Universe, so they can be there.

EDIT: Also, no reviewer is capable of being completely and truly unbiased about every game. Everyone has pre-conceived notions and thoughts. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

If it's something like Microsoftdaily, then maybe they're professional.enough to be trusted

On the other hand, it's obvious that a reviewer with a name like Xboxfan420 is going to be biased.

You just need to see if they make decent reviews. And even if they weren't biased, there'll always be accusations regardless of how fair they are

Why not?

Metacritic isn't the best way to judge a game anyways, so it's fine that they have bias towards the game.

If I'm a Nintendo fan, I would like to see and read Nintendo reviewers, no?

You'd be suprised at some sites that criticize Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft then.

It honestly depends on how the review is written. If it has legitimate complaints, legitamte praises, then it should be counted. If it only exists to complain or praise, it shouldn't be counted.

some of the single system website review sites are actually insanely unbiased. There is one Nintendo one that gives them extremely harsh reviews more often than not haha

it really a case is case basis though.

The reality is that a lot of the big review sites that preview all system games are biased themselves, and/or paid off for some things (cough EA /Activision).

All review sites should be question, not just single system ones. The difference is irrelevant really, some sites focus on one type of game or system BECAUSE they don't have the resources to do more

The reality is that every reviewer is biased to a certain degree, calling for an unbiased system doesn't make much sense.
Also that site is presented as "critic" but making judgments based on general consensus is pretty much the opposite of critical thinking.

At the end of the day a review is just an opinion anyway. Trust those you believe to give an unbiased one, even if there is too much water.
