Forums - PC Discussion - Gears Of War 4 To Be A Serious Technical Pusher On PC

Looks damn shiny even on the lower settings I still think they have done great work in bringing Gears into this generation but retaining that Gritty look of the first games on the X360.

As cool as that is, my question is how does it fair against the x1 versions? There have been a few games from MS that seem to require 970 with very little visual difference than the x1 version apart from the usual resolution even though a 970 is far more powerful.

What I am trying to get at is, if the x1 version looks similar to what a 970 is able to do, its not really pushing PC to its limits from a jaw dropping zomg graphics point of view but rather, shit optimization point of view.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I havent even got to buying a 1070 yet and its already outdated, dafuuuq?!

That looks fantastic even on low! I'm not sure I can pull it off with all PP effects on full with decent fps though (as in 60+).

"Shit optimization". - I always hate sayings like these, mainly because they're actually used wrong. Things can't have "bad", "poor", "shit" optimization. Not a big deal, just one of my pet peeves with people and the English language (as is when people say "you have bad logic" or "I don't understand your logic". ;P

Next, the X1 version won't have many of those extra details. It rests between Medium and High Settings.

Neh, shit is usually more impactful :P

And yea, it won't have many of those extra details but my point is, where does a 970 fit in? Is it high at 1080p? Cause as an example, we look at Forza Horizon 3, a 970 really struggles to keep up with 60fps with ultra settings which it more than should be able to:

And of course, the x1 is at high settings and runs at 1080p native + 30fps.

Impactful or not, it's still incorrect. ;)

As for the comparison to Forza, that's an entirely different engine/game/team. Can't use that as a sure-fire example. Gears's case is unique, anyway,  given the extra details are not just a mere bump in res/textures.

Yea I know its a different etc, but it has been similar for many MS releases onto PC. ReCore and Quantum Break suffer similar issues.

I hope Gears of War is better though.

One uses the Unity engine, the other, a propietary engine tailored to sum of its parts, while Gears is running on UE4. There also wasn't an extensive test done on those titles and neither supports multi GPUs. Considering everything, they just aren't comparable, regardless of their one common thread of UWP.

I hope you are right otherwise, #Skip for me. I am not saying that UWP is the thing which caused the issue, but rather that they were all published by MS that was the issue.

Eh, I hear this a lot and never understand why. "Published by Microsoft" doesn't instantly stamp the project as "UN-OPTIMIZED". It's interesting that few ever talk about Forza 6: Apex or Gears Ultimate (both fully functional and well ported titles).

They get a stamp like that when they start having several releases that fall into the "un-optimized" category. And its not like Gears of War Ultimate didn't have its own set of problems.

Really, when a publisher releases games where un-opimized games are the norm and optimized games are the exception, I would say they deserve to get that stamp.

It looks nice, so far all the xbox one games have been running good on my PC, cant wait for gears :)

I'm sorry, but I've not seen this pattern that you speak of. I see hits and misses, much like PC games in general.

Well, The big games that MS released on PC post Windows 10 are: (I might miss some so correct me if I am wrong)

Killer Instinct - Hit
Gears of War Ultimate - Miss
Forza 6 Apex - Hit but still in Beta
Quantum Break - Miss
ReCore - Miss
Forza Horizon 3 - Miss

I see more misses than hits. Now I don't mean quality of the game or anything, I mean from a purely optimization standpoint compared to X1. I don't expect to get console level optimization but I do expect a 970 to perform more than what they did in those games.

And yes, PC games are a hit or a miss but other companies who have more misses than hits on their big games also get that stamp.
